Carb tuning.

My '73' is 'loading up' at idle, and is also running rich enough it is throwing a little black smoke while driving. Does anybody know what the fuel mixture screws should be set at? Maybe the float level is running too high??

The proper way to set the idle mixture screws, is to hook a vacuum guage to a non-timed vacuum port on the carb. The mixture screws should be adjusted for the highest vacuum. If you don't have a vacuum guage, adjust the screws to obtain the highest idle.

The fuel mixture screws are for idle ONLY, just as soon as you crack the throttle that system is gone! The only reason they are there is so the Idle can be adjusted for vehicles at various altitudes and idle smoothly. If you are running rich going down the road your carb has some other problem.
