Steering box replacement

Could some one point me in the right direction please? I think that I need to replace the steering box on my sons 1979 F250 4x4 with PS. The steering just started to jerk/work sometimes and dosen't return totally some of the time. Pump and belt are ok, from what I have read here, it is time for a new steering box. I have one from a parts truck, but I am not sure on how to adjust it properly to make sure that it turns equal amounts from right to left. the arm is already removed from the parts steering box. Looking for adjustment/replacement procedure that I can understand.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

The pitman arm on that box can only be installed every 90 degrees. It is impossible to get it wrong. In other words, you will never be one or two splines off. If you inspect the splines, you will see that every 90 degrees, there is a large spline that indexes the pitman arm. Real easy to replace. Once you have the box replaced, as long as you do not change the drag link length, you should be just about right on the money, and your radius will not be affected.

As usual, right on the money 75F350. Only real adjustment on those boxes is with the nut/screw assembly on the top cover that adjusts how tight the clearances are between the gears.

Just make sure your wheels are pretty straight and turn your box all the way from one side to the other. Usually about 4 turns so you want 2 turns from one side to center, then install your pitman arm to line up with your steering linkage. Like 75F350 said there are large splines to line it up.
