Ok this started a ways back. My 1989 F250 HD with 351W, starts losing power not much at frist but gets worse and worse. only codes it got is Purdge canister not purdging and ACT reading to hot. I get a new act still the act code. I figer its a bad wire and will be gitting to it sooon. IN the mean time here the truck goes to **** i have no power at all can not get to 55 try to hook up to a trailer and cant move the 4000Lb load. i take it in to my local shop. they spend a week and $500 of my cash and tell me they are stumped, lord help me. the only thing they did find was i had at some point had a mouse that had chewed up a few of the injector wires and they had fixed them and cleaned teh EGR. now that i got it back i still can hardly get it to 60mph and untill it warms up good if you give it much gas at all she stumbles and dies. I go in questioning them today asking about if they check for vac leaks or put a pump on the egr and such and he tells me he couldent gind a vacume leak but also tells me the EGR wouldnt not hold preassure" Lord "
at this point i just walk out after telling him what i think of his skills. I am not great at these sort of things but i piddle around a bit. Where should i start? Change the EGR? any ideas would be great
I'd say you need to verify the exhaust is not clogged.
A primitive test would be to put you hand on the tail pipe outlet and note the exhaust flow coming out.
Have someone rev the engine and see if the exhaust flow increases.
If you took it to a muffler place, they could measure the back pressure of the exhaust system. Or if you're a backyard mechanic, drop the exhaust and take it for a test drive.
Chewed wires are not good, maybe they got to something else too. Since you know you had rodents in there, check the air box for blockages like a nest, and the exhaust as well.
You should also check the codes for yourself, verify it builds 43psi at the fuel rail(engine off or vacuum removed), and that all the plugs and wires are good.
Ok I have been messing with it today here. First i took a light and mirror and spent well over a hr looking everyplace under the dash and under the hood. I cant see anymore that has been chewed so i think I good on that but will keep it in mind as i go. next the basics new plugs wires cap and rotor. no change. I am not going to have anymore time for it today but was thinking tomarrow would start buy cutting the pipes off just ahead of the cat. I have been wanting to pull the cat and pipe them back to a set of tractor mufflers anywat figer this is a good time to do it and see how she runs with them completly off. hopefully i can get a vac pump from my friend over the weekend and test the EGR myself.
