alright heres the deal. im gettin ready to build a 351, a mild build but built for power non the less. this punk kid i know just bought an 06 mustang gt, can i get more power than him out of my 351 without absolutly killing my mileage, not be faster just be able to say i have more ponies and more torque. just to bust his ***** cause he would never race me anyway cause he just does everything for looks, he never does anything to prove it. please conanski or baronvon please look.
The big question is.. how much $$ you got to spend?
I'm guessing the Stang has the 4.6 in it, so the 5.8 will produce more TQ without even trying.. no contest there. The 4.6 was also rated at 300hp, and this is very achievable from a 5.8 with a little work. You'll need ported heads and lower intake, a decent cam, and full exhaust system. The 19lb injectors can support this so you don't even need an upgraded computer, but if you have mass air that's a bonus. If done right this combo should produce a little over 300HP and 375+ ft/lbs TQ at the crank, so it bests the mustang on paper, but since a truck is heavier it won't beat it in a race.
Yeah, considering you'd be hauling 1,000 more pounds down the track it's probably a good thing you won't be racing him. He has a lot more of his weight on the rear wheels too. Trucks are made for hauling lumber, Mustangs are made for hauling a$$.
Funny thing about making more power, the first little bit extra isn't too expensive. Taking your engine from 200 to 250 hp won't be too bad - a cam change and new exhaust would probably do it. Getting from 250 to 300 will cost quite a bit more - new heads, and some computer tuning at the very least. Taking it past 300 (and I'll defer a bit to Paul on this since he knows more about EFI than I) will cost a whole lot more - a new intake, injectors, yet another cam, more tuning, etc..
I suppose you could find a mass air flow EFI set up for a 351 and supercharge it. Or maybe a 150 shot of laughing gas.
i was just wondering cause hes a punk. i think mine will make more the way im planning to guild but i havent actually purchased anything yet, so we'll see when im done thanks a bunch.

Let me tell you about it.. so far I got $3000 spent on heads, tuner, injectors, intake, and valvetrain, and I'm still not ready to install it.
hay just passen by and would say just put a super charger on it and that alone at 9psi would give you at lest 100hp give or take and maybe alittle programing anway good luck and hope you put the punk in his place
what all r you doing to it. what is ur goal and what kinda power will it make. what year?
I'm upgrading the heads to something significantly better, and this is what's necessary to do it on one of these truck and retain EFI. Even with the cam I have this motor should produce over 350hp and 400ft/lbs TQ when I'm done, with potential for over 400hp.
No offense, but anger is a pretty lousy reason for starting a project. You're looking at a pretty serious time and money commitment, and you should do it for the right reasons.

Tell that to the people who built the Great Wall of China...
Regarding the wall, I see a direct one-to-one comparison here, and I urge the OP to build an engine that will smoke the Mustang. Your mpgs should be ok, 4 city/10 highway, and you'll have all that satisfaction.
Seriously, imo, it's hard to tell which of these postings is the bigger pile of road apples, this or the 5.3 vs. 4.9 in the six forums. I recognize the good faith and valuable information of those posting in answer, but really, when you have apples and oranges, just eat your orange and be happy with it.
