Exclamation 302 or 351w?

I'm Building a pre runner, I have a 1991 F-150 with a 302. I Gutted out the whole truck. When i removed the dash i about **** my pants. Too much electrical.
At the moment I'm working on the rear suspension after that I will address the motor.

My dilemma rebuild the 302 or buy a 351 and build it up. Pre running Is constant high RPM's. I'm Trying to figure out the pro's and the con's between the two. I'm on a budget of course but i want a stout motor i can cruise at high rpm's all day. Pump gas is a must. 500 hp ish the goal, if 600 hp is only a grand more why not. any input would help. I'm working a lot of over time so i want to start buying parts and get the ball rolling.

Thanks Shaun.

The production 302 block will need structural reinforcement to handle that power level, the 5.8 block won't. You'll need better rods and rod bolts if not a forged crank, and a completely new top end. A '94+ roller block would make a good platform to build upon. Sounds like fun, I love trucks with suspension that actually moves.. always wanted to build something with 36" suspension travel for the urban jungle.

A Ford Performance 392 longblock making 475HP and 495ft/lbs TQ is listed at $8600, that's a stroker motor in case you missed it. As a DIY project it still won't be cheap but I bet you could do it for under $5k.

So would it be better off stroking a 351 or not?

Joe Sherman Racing - Welcome

Click the street engine link. Joe sells a 450hp 347 stroker for $6000 and a 550hp 347 for which there is no price listed. Tell him what you're doing and he'll hook you up with the right combo.

When you say constant high rpm, how high do you mean? Obviously, running at 5,000 rpm is a whole lot different than running at 7,000. There's an old adage, speed's just a question of money - how fast do you want to go? To get those kind of power numbers in a reliable/durable package won't be cheap.

On the plus side, when you drive it down the street it should strike fear into the hearts of women and children. There's not much in life that's sweeter than the sound of a lopey SBF idling at 1,400 rpm...

Well wanted to do a DIY , I know a guy that builds motors for circle track cars but he only knows chevys and mopars. I've asked him what i should build he says put a chevy in it . I tell him i know a chevy is cheaper but im a ford guy so he says to stroke the 302. He doesn't know fords. rpm 3000 to 4,000 rpm . Going to run a c-6 with 456's or 511's .c6 has no overdrive so if i want to go 100+ need to wind it out. So what I've gathered so farr is get a newer block so i can use roller rockers (if thats what 94+ roller block is) and new crank rods pistons and expensive heads. Can someone elaborate on specific things so i can get a list together. I'm not a gas person I know a lil about diesels, So with the gas parts im lost. Don't know if things are over kill or not enough thanks.

Check this site, Ford Racing, and look at specs. They have some specific info:

Ford Racing Performance Parts [Small Block 302 Based Engines]

OK, so you want to pre-run what, the Baja? Remember, you are now at the point where you can't register this thing in CA anymore.

You want to go 100 mph:

With 32 inch tires, 1:1 high, 4.11s, you will run 4315 rpm. I don't think you need 500 let alone 600 hp to do this. You could probably do it with an honest 250 horse.

OK, back to gearing, your 2.47 first gives you 10 mph for every 1066 rpm, so that's probably low enough for what you're doing.

Here's what I'd like to do with your money: I'd get the Boss 302 block, and make a 327/331 out of it. Aim for 350-400 hp.

Use a beefed C4 too, no need for a C6.

Less weight when you are flying through the air. Less weight to stop etc.

More money for suspension and roll cage and GPS and radio and leak resistant fuel cell and helicopter to follow you.....

Just a thought.....gosh I love thinking about spending other peoples money...

Well the front has 24" of travel and the rear has about 34". For the most part the truck is set. I have the shocks. 35" tires. Still want to build a 351 I aslo want to go to pismo so a 500hp motor will throw a fat roost with my padlde tires . I'm not worried about somg i ot a hookup at a smog check only

A roller block refers to roller lifters, roller rockers will bolt on any head that uses studs and guide plates.

Dyno Board - FordMuscle.com Forums

Go take a look around on the Ford Muscle board, particularly the dyno board link above. Lots of real, dyno verified numbers and engine details that should get you pointed in the right direction in terms of component selection.

Even if you're planning to assemble the engine yourself, Joe can help you out. He knows how to make serious horsepower in a SBF. Bounce it off him and see what he says.

Keith Craft builds some wicked engines too.

Chaunbot, just to give you an idea. I did a 408 w last year. It was probly around 8k or so. I am guessing, since I got very good deals on my parts and machineing. I used a 69 351 windsor block, eagle stroker crank, eagle h-beam rods, rhs aluminum heads custom ground comp cams solid llifter cam. It is around may 400 - 500 hp, just a guess. I would rather be real conservative, than be one of the " I got 800 hp" guys. but from my experience, it was all the little things that really killed me. elec fuel pump, regulator, fuel lines, motor mounts, just all that smaller stuff add's up quick. Just a thought, you might want to check PAW ( Performance Automotive Warehouse ) They sell stroker kits for everything that are ready to be assembled. Hope this helps to give you some idea. just my .02
