Has anyone ever put a 79 F250 cab and bed onto a newer frame. I've found a really nice 79 (which is my favorite Ford body ever!!) F250 2wd, and already have a completely rusted out 86 f350 4x4. I was wondering how hard it would be to put the 79 body onto the 86 frame. THANKS!!
I believe the 80's frames are wider-I don't recall anyone doing this yet. Never say never, anything can be possible. I could see the front cab mounts being a problem, and perhaps the steering shaft-to match up.
If doing or getting welding done for mods, you will want certified welds, and documents to prove it. I have seen all kinds of weird combo's around-although nowadays rarely see any on the road anymore.
Time to start measureing! In awkward areas, I usually tape a piece of string-as close to center, with a plumb bob-not accurate but will give you an idea.
The 73-79 body swaps can be tricky within their own years-some bolt up, some require new holes. My 74 F100 4x4 body to 76 F250 4x4 chassis required new holes for the back of the cab, and the box bolt holes all needed repositioning. I have seen the 80's up boxes on dentsides before.
Good luck, and let us know what you find!
I wish I could find the ad I saw in a local truck trader a couple months ago, scan it and send it to you, 79man. It advertised a 1979 Ford truck body on a 1993 frame. It was a cummins, and the whole truck--frame, drive train, suspension, everything was a 93 except the body. That was the first I ever heard of anyone doing that, but that shows it can be done!
Truck Universe did a show where a group put a 71 cab on a 2004 F450 to run the sand flats. They used the floor and fire wall from the 04 and attached the 71 cab to it. It turned out really nice.
