resetting timing

I think I may have royally messed things up. I need to find out how to reset the IP back to the factory marks. Problem is that the engine is still in the thruck and I have no idea what I am looking for. I notice that there is a mark on the flywheel does this denote TDC? Of course it still won't tell me if it is on the intake or exhaust so I guess I will have to pull the valve cover.Does anyone know where I might find a manual for this engine online or who makes the best repair manual?
maybe I should start from the beginning, I pulled the left head and replaced the head gasket. I unbolted the timing pump housing and removed the whole gear. Before removing the gear I removed the tach pickup and scribed a line in the threads also marking the corresponding tooth. When I replaced the gear I lined up the two marks before tightening the cover down. Now I finally have the engine back together and turn over the engine from the key. It sounds as if there is no compression and there is no ignition at all. Part of me wants to get a can of ether and see if it will fire at all But I know better than that. I am at a complete loss as what to do next.

***thou shall not use either on a diesel engine***

Some get away with it, but you are rolling the dice every time you use it. In most cases it will crack the upper compression ring and kill some of the performance, hence the myth that diesels get addicted to either.

Are your injector lines actually squishing fuel? (have you bled the injector lines?)

The injectors, injector pump and lines will self purge just by cranking, but it usually takes me 2 or 3 20 second bursts to fill the filter and get enough fuel pressure to fire the engine.

Do not crank for more than 20 seconds at a time, and allow a 2 min cool down for the starter between attempts.

Travis,

Was the crankshaft rotated while the IP was off?

Even if it was, the cam and crank should still be in time and you should have compression.

Do you have power at the fuel shut off solenoid when the key is on?
Front connector drivers side.

Got the engine started. Running a little rough though. If the gear was off by a tooth what would happen? would it run but just crappy?

Yes it could run, but not very well if the IP was off one tooth.

Or you could still have air in the fuel system.

How long did you have it running?

Just long enough to make sure fuel was pumping through the IP. Have a injector that has a leak around it, can see bubbles coming off the threads. Maybe I forgot to tork that one down.

You most likely still have air in the system.

If that injector was loos it would leak compresion most likely the nozle isn't screwed tight to the injector body or the threads are messed up on the nozle. You may be able to just tighten the injector down more to stop the leak or you may have to pull it and tighten the nozle to the body.

Once you fix that let it run at 1500 rpm for a while to get all the air out and see if it smooths out at idle.
