I see Pontiac will build an El Camino type car/truck. Why won't Ford bring over their Australian Falcon Ute, a modern and slick looking Ranchero? It's much lighter than an F-150, and with a V-6 should get commendable mileage. Of course it can't be worked like an F-150, but for the daily commute and light hauling, it would fit the bill nicely.
Everything I have heard about the aussie cars is that they just aren't designed to meet our requirements, especially for safety and it would take a ton of R&D as well as cash to get them "ready" for Us sales. That said Mullaley is trying to streamline the Ford line-up and modularize it as much as possible, unfortunately that probably means the aussie cars will be more like US cars instead of the other way around. They are incorporating some Euro designs into future Us cars though.
With today's move toward smaller cars, I could see any new efforts to make a Ranchero resembling a Subaru Brat (if they're not careful). Ugh. Dodge's Rampage did so poorly in sales I think that was the last straw.
The ranchero would be a great move right now, as it would get the mileage of a car, but still could haul stuff. The new bronco is supost to be out by 2010, it will be built on the new F-100 platform .
I use my 89 Squire wagon as a truck. Drop the rear seat down, it will carry 8' and 10' 2x4's, strap some longer stuff on the roof. 20-22MPG on 10% ethanol.

Ladders on the roof, goat in the back seat...there's just no limit to what you can do with a rig like that... There was a guy on here a while back that was gonna use diesel truck stacks as side pipes on one of those, was that you?
Truck stacks? Not my idea but it sounds cool..maybe when I put headers on and roof lights. No goats in the back seat, but, I was able to fit 2 1967 F100 doors, rear seats out of a Galaxie, a couple of tires and rims and a 5 gal bucket of paint inside.
Given the rarity of a regular cab truck, I just don't see how two seater car with a bed is gonna survive the US marketplace.
I had great difficulty finding a loaded regular cab truck. A Ranchero wouldn't work for me because I need it as a tow vehicle. The great majority of regular cab pick-ups are bought to be worked. they are bought by farmers, contractors and construction people. Not jobs that could be done by a Ranchero.
I disagree, the majority of p/u's have been bought by yuppies of late as a status symbol to haul thier mulch to the burbs. A ranchero would work fine for them, the farmer and what not could still buy the F-series.
