I am having a difficult time finding an engine kit that is specific to the 2001 explorer. I would like to assume that this kit Federal Mogul MHP174-000 - Federal Mogul Premium Engine Rebuild Kits - summitracing.com from summit racing that does fit a 95 motor will be a compatible kit with the 2001 exploder motor with the exception of the plenum gaskets and a few minor odds and ends. Is there any reason the pistons, bearings, and major gaskets and seals wouldn't fit?
Thanks again for the help!!
There are probably 6 reasons the stuff won't work: The annual update/fiddling every year... Keep looking and/or confirm the kit covers changes/updates.
Well, I did my best to take your advice. By looking at the kit contents, the 95 kit is missing a couple gaskets, and has a different set of main bearings. This set of main bearings I could only find undersized, and my machinist said the crank is fine at standard, just needs polished.
I compared a 90's block, caps and factory bearings with the explorer block. Mains #1,2,4, and 5 have the same part# I checked all the main caps and the #3 bearing (including the thrust width) with .001 accuracy calipers, and they are all identical. All I can figure, is that the decided to improve the older bearing, or that since the exploder never came with a manual trans, they changed the #3 bearing.
I will post the results when I get this thing running... But I wouln't hold your breath!
Try the dealer for bearings, and see if the part number is the same for 2001 and 1995. As you speculate, maybe there's been revisions to the bearing, like removing lead from it...
What are the Ford reference numbers (N.B.: the numbers on the part are close to but not the same as part numbers) on your 2001 engine bearings?
I bet the bearings are interchangeable with the earlier ones. Catalog listings are frequently incomplete and/or wrong.
