Good battery charger

Since I've gotten an employer provided car I don't drive my truck or motorcycle nearly as much any longer. I got a Sears trickle charger to keep the Goldwing ready to ride, but the truck sits outside so I can't use the same set up with it.

So far the longest I've went without starting it is two weeks and it started with no problem at all, but I don't want to take the chance it'll be dead when I need it. It may sit a month or so between startings, now.

So, would one of those little solar deals that plugs into the cigarette lighter keep the truck charged up or do those work?

I use a Schumacher brand battery charger on everything from my ATV's to my truck with no problem. I can get you a part # when I get home this evening but it's been wonderful. Just a tabletop model, not one of those cart deals. My truck can sit up to a week or two also but I make a point to go out and start it up just to freshen up the juice and get the oil circulating.

I tried one of the solar panels and my results were poor. I went to a trickle charge for my 73 Nova and a heavy-duty timer. I hard wired the charger to the battery (there is room under the battery tray for the charger) and made a plug in the front-passenger wheel well. Then when I put her in the trailer I just have a drop cord to the trailer. The timer turns on the charger for two hours a night and the battery is always ready to go (and the Nova draws some serious current to start her up).

Do you have to separate the batteries, or is attempting to charge both with a single charger ok?

No, you don't have to separate the batteries.

I have one of the waterproof battery tenders, I think it is 800mA. I just set it right on the ground next to the vehicle. The whole thing is encapsulated in epoxy, and they say it is waterproof. So far this seems to be true.

It's this one:

Batterytender.com - Home of All Your Charging Needs Waterproof 800

I have one on each of my four vehicles, including a motorcycle (which came from the factory with a matching pigtail wired in). The results have been great.

It charges the parallel Superduty batteries just fine.

I have one of the Schumacher (Sp?) trickle chargers on my Mercedes and it works great. I thought about putting one on the truck, but the directions that were included with the unit explicitly said not to install it on a dual battery system. I couldn't understand why, but I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

NAPA sells a small unit that has a bracket mount on it that goes right on the battery and keeps it their and since it is waterproof and under the hood, they work great. I have had several of them and 100% good luck.

I use my Schumacher on my truck and RV batteries with dual setup. But then again, I not one to read directions very often...

I just went and pulled the instructions to make sure I had remembered correctly. Yeah, I save the instructions in the file. The instructions do say not to use the charger on batteries in parallel, that it's designed for only a single 12 volt battery.

Like most things, I guess the actual experience speaks louder than the printed instructions

Maybe it's an efficiency issue. I should look at instructions more often.

I wonder if it has something to do with the possibility that one battery could be weaker then the other, which may cause one to overcharge.
