I know that it's a b*tch, but it does save money. I did it for about half of my working life (retired ), and it saved a lot of gas. Did end up making some extra trips in the evening to pick up things that I would have got on my way home, but I still feel that I came out ahead.
Just wondering because there are a lot of gas price complaints, and plans for smaller vehicles -- but, no mention of car pooling.
I also wonder if anyone is taking it further, and buddying up on weekend plans.
We have had some that live out of town car pool for years, and now that the price is up some others have started pooling also. For me I only live about 8miles from work and on third shift the pickings are slim for pooling. Might consider it one of these days, but so far there are other ways of conserving that are easier to swallow.
I do, but I also work out of town and live with the guy I ride to work in so it works out good. Only problem is when one wants to leave the other either goes or someone waits.
My wife and I do. I drive right by her office to and from where I work about another 6-7 miles down the road. Saves us about $8 a day in gas alone driving one more fuel efficient vehicle, not to mention all the other mileage related costs such as oil changes, tires, etc. We tend to average riding together about 3 days a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. We've been doing it for about 2 months now, having saved about $200 or so in fuel alone in that period of time.
Georgia also has a commute alternative incentive program in place that pays you $60 a month for 3 months to carpool or use transit that we are participating in. It may be worth your while if you live in a metropolitan area to see if such a program exists there as well.
I think carpooling was a lot more common years ago when jobs were the standard 8-5 and most people lived closer to where they work. Now with more people living further away and working odd(er) hours it makes it hard to hook up with people that have compatible schedules. I don't know anyone that lives near me that works in the general area that I do, or works similar hours, not to mention the fact that my hours aren't "set" so some days I end up working 12+ hours (like last night), or some days I work 7. Doesn't make for good carpool scheduling.
I think in todays society, with everything being so rushed, no one has the time for the inconvenience of carpooling. I do know a couple people that carpool though. My neighbor and his wife used to car pool until he got a new job on the other side of town.
I used to drive 3 men to work when I had my car, come pay day(every 2 weeks) they conveniently would forget to pay me.Then the excuses would start,I live 2 blocks from you,you dont have to go out of your way for me,if all 3 of us give you 20 dollars every 2 weeks you dont have to pay anything yourself for gas...so when I got my truck I refused to give anyone a ride. And of those 3 men, none owned vehicles,so the wear and tear on my car(dirty clothes, dirty shoes, empty coffee cups on the floor, butts left in the ashtray in the back seat)was ridiculous,so no car pooling for me.If I need to cut back more than I already have,I`ll buy a small motorcycle for the summer.Good idea ford2go,just not for me.
Years ago, a co-worker and I shared rides. I had a Mustang, he had one of those short 1967 Bronco's. Everything was cool until winter. When the roads became icy, we were headed to work in my buddy's Bronco. Suddenly we were going backward down the icy road. Then, we were going fine straight ahead. He kinda grinned, and said" heck it happens all the time, no big deal!"
