Cummins swap!

I finally got my hands on a 92 cummins w/ a getrag.

What else would I need besides motor and tranny to do a complete swap?

I was browsing online and found this site FordCummins.com: Home Any body know the reliability?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!

TIA
Jake

If you can get the whole donor truck, get it. You will need clutch master and slave cylinders, parts from under the dash to make the clutch work, starter, alternater, motor mounts and wiring to name a few. I used the dodge radiator and hoses also. Your '92 should be intercooled, you will want that. The small parts, if purchased seperatly will likely add up to more than the price of the engine.

I was able to sell parts from my Dodge for over half the purchase price. Even with the added cost of diesel, it still saves me money. I get better than double the mileage I did with the 460, and hope to add another 5 mpg when I get the gears swaped out in my front and rear differentials.

The only thing Ford that will frown on you is other owners that don't have the cool truck you will end up with.

I'm in the midst of a similar project with a '98 12v. I'm looking into swapping the Ford body directly onto the Dodge chassis. I'm looking to benefit from the updated brakes and suspension. Still have more measuring to do but so far it seems close.

I've heard the adapters from ford-cummins aren't that good if you are going to use a ford trans.

You will realy like the mpg over the gas motor I got 6.5mpg with the 460 now I get 24.8mpg with the same gears 3.54 have .20% overdrive.Just wait till you pull up ata gas station and some one give you a funny look when the hear the deisel running We get that all the time with my truck and my wifes 72 chevy c10 with a 5.9 in it.It's priceless when you see the look on the faces.

I'm going to use the getrag so i really don't need a trans adapter. I'm just curious about their manual, and motor mounts.

All I know so far is what I've read. I'll be doing this swap later in the summer or fall, depending on when I get a donor and a few other things. But from my research the manual isn't all it's cracked up to be. I think you would be better of reading the posts on this site and others where people have documented what they did and how they would do it differently. Then ask questions from there.

As far as the ford gods frowning, they use cummins engines in the 650 and 750 trucks. Why not use it in a 3/4 ton truck?

Do I really need the master and slave cylinder from the cummins pickup? I know that the Dodge uses a np205 aswell will it bolt up to mine? I know for sure I can get the clutch assembly, the intercooler, alternator, and possibly starter. hmm I need to find some more info. I have searched around and can't find much can anybody point me in the right direction?

the dodge NP205 is married if I remember correctly and yours should be divorced, so you can still use the ford one.

Read up on the getrag. From what I've read they aren't that great - but probably as good as the 727 in my 91 cummins which seems to just go and go no matter how much abuse it sees.

As others have said - buy the whole truck if you can. I bought the 91 dodge complete so I could have everything I'd need. I plan to run the dodge wiring for the complete truck so I can update my wiring a bit (newer stuff is rated for higher loads/draw), as well as the doge seat, steering column, possibly steering box, etc. I haven't gotten around to my swap yet (found out I had to move just when I was getting ready to start) but having the diesel to drive around in the mean time has been nice.

As far as the Ford gods frowning - no they won't. The only Ford gods/guys that won't be smiling are the jealous ones!

My tcase is married. I don't have the $$$ for the full truck. I'm buying the cummins and tranny for a steal so I'm not really complaining and I'm sure I can buy the rest from him if I need it.

good deal then. I got my complete truck for $1800 and drove it home. Plus I have had it around and driveable for 6 months so it worked out well. I just couldn't pass up the whole truck for less than most people pay for a long block - especially when I get some of that back upon sellnig what I don't use!

I'm jealous. This motor/tranny I'm getting for 1k. I just talked to a guy and he just sold a getrag he had laying around for 1500. and cummins will make 1500 easy. So I think I did pretty good.

I think the ford 205 has different splines If you use a 205 from a dodge you need one from a getrag5sp it will fit a NV4500 and a NV5600 you have to leave the seal out of the transfercase then it will bolt on not any problems.the automatic have smaller shafts.
