I had the same issues a couple of weeks ago, finally took the alternator off and had it tested in the store on the machine, it was the two of the three coil wire on the outer magnetic field that we broken, so low load day to day with no light not a big deal, high load my batterys went dead just like what you are describing. Good luck.
Made it home last night. At the closer I got to home the lower I was reading on my gauge. It got so low that my airbag light went to flickering. I could hit the brake and a few seconds after the engine would go down to an idle, the voltage would rise and the lights get real bright. Charging real good at idle sped. very little at 1500 or better.
Rbaker6336, Thank you for this link. Folks, I ordered this item he suggested and they are top notch. Not a reman, original, new Alternator. 135 amp. Total cost was 114 dollars that is shipping included. took three days to get. thanks for the info and the help. saved me over 100 dollars from dealer price. And did not have to send core. THANKS A MILLION. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!
I replaced my Alt 3 yrs ago with a lifetime reman from napa, just had to replace it this year and didn't cost me a dime. personally for the cost of these things adn the fact that even the parts to rebuild them add up fast and may or may not cure the problem were as a complete new rebuilt one will and when the second one doesn't cost anything it's well worth the money to buy one with a lifetime warrenty especially if your planning on keeping the truck (if your just fixing it to be able to sell it then by all means, cheapest you can get buy with) but what happenes when you spend the money for a new regulator and find like Bryans that one of the coil wires or hard parts go bad instead?
Yes I can rebuild starters and alt and have many, many times and on some things would again especially when they are hard to come by parts but when there is a life time replacment unit available anymore it's just not worth it to rebuild them yourself anymore
