Finally doing my cab swap. Putting a 73 2wd body on my 79 4x4 frame. Body is on, but I'm trying to figure out how to make the steering column work. I want to use the 73 column, since it's in better shape then my 4x4 column (i.e. it doesn't have vice grips for a shifter ).
The 73 has the old style bushing, and the 79 has the plastic 'u-joint' style connection.
I don't know if I'm able to switch the guts out, or if there's a way to just change the bottom ends out...Any ideas guys?
pull the steering wheel off there is a snap ring that holds the sectur shaft in from the top remove the snap ring then you can pull the shaft out if its the same diameter as the one in the 2wd column just slide it into that column the only problem you may have is in 77 ford revamped the steering on the 3/4 ton 4x4s you can take the plastic bushing/bearing holder off the 79 column and put it onto the other column. I did this on my 75 4x4 when I swapped out the 4sd for an auto. look at the top bearing use the besy of the two and put some grease on it same with the bottom. It takes a little time but it's not to tuff a job . GOOD LUCK
