Brakes BRAKES -- WHERE ARE THE BRAKES ?!!?*

* It's from Star Tours.

But it did happen to me this weekend while driving my little girl around town. Someone decided to make an illegal U-Turn in front of me and when I slammed on the brakes I lost all pressure. Pulled the Parking Brake and stopped just in time. After a couple choice but edited words I limped home very slowly.

Now before I bought her last year I checked all fluids and she was parked for about 3 months. She didn't have the greatest pressure and I knew she need a good brake job but now I'm thinking my new paint job is going to turn into a full brake job. I checked the fluid when I got home and she was dry as a bone.

My question is where should I look first? Why am I only finding rear drums and pads and not fronts?? And worse case how much for a brake job like this???

Its a easy system, check all line (steel and rubber) for leaks, then pull all wheels, check the cylinders, Autozone was able to get all the cylinders for my 1959. Get the drums turned, new shoes I got at napa, they have $20 shoes and $40 shoes. I would suspect a master cylinder problem only if you saw a leak from it underhood, or inside the cab, or it still had fluid but no brake pressure. You can get everything even the drums new so, don't worry to hard about finding parts....

Thanx. I didn't even think of NAPA. But if the 1960 is a Rear Wheel Drive, why are the front Drums $30 more then the Rear?

Rear drums may be compatible with later year trucks unlike the fronts. Have you checked your old drums? You can have someone mic the old drums and there will be a spec(which I don't have at the moment) and a brake shop should be able to turn them to a like new finish. If you find out the old drums are not turnable, then worry about new drums, all 4 drums turned should be less than $50.

I'm just planning for the worst before I pull them and look at them this weekend. Have nothing else to do while in front of the comuter all day but make a budget and now turn that "New Paint Job" into a brake job and some other odds and ends for the truck.

Nothing wrong with planning it out, always nice to know costs in case they arrive. Might want to think about adjusters and if they are free and moving as well. Do'em right once, and keep them adjusted and cleaned everyonce in a while and they'll last along time and stop great.

If you are going to go to the trouble of doing a complete brake job you might consider upgrading the brake adjusters to the later style automatic adjusters. Its an easy enough swap.

Ford went to automatic adjusters somewhere around 1966 so all you need to do is buy the adjuster kit and the spring kit for a 1966 or newer truck. I know they have the parts at NAPA. It turns out you need both the spring kit and the hardware kit so thats basically buying two kits per wheel. I have a 9" Ford differential from a 1960 truck in my 49, I added the self adjusters to it when I put it under the truck.

If this is your first brake job you would do well to have a good diagram of how it all fits together, AND (now this is important) only take apart one side at a time. That way when you get confused (and it happens...lol) you can refer to the other side to make sure you are going back together correctly.

Good luck with it
Bobby

Funny bobby should mention the adjusters, I just did that swap, I only did fronts, will do backs later, you'll need the adjuster kit, and spring/hardware kit, I used 1965 Napa can get those kits aswell. I found a diagram here: That picture is of the passenger side. I'll quit posting in your thread now

FordFunKid, I'm seeing some conflicting info on your build and no Gallery??
Did you say pads/calipers on the front and drums on the rear??
Have you crawled under it and looked for leaks at the wheels???
No leaks? Does your ride have a brake booster??
You can probably leave the lines mounted to the master cylinder, bit remove the master cylinder and look for fluid, slippery stuff it is....Let us know ..Good Luck!

Pics will be up tonight for sure. Drums all around and as far as a booster I don't know. It has it's reserve in the engine bay. After that your guess is better then mine.

If its stock it should not have a booster and have drums all around. It should have a single reservoir master cylinder, actually their should be two indentical master cylinders on the firewall....the other one is for the clutch.

When you get to doing the brakes remember just like taking a picture the short shoe goes in the front. And like Bobby said do one side at a time and keep the adjusters with the wheel they came off of some have right and left threads so if you go with the auto adjuster they will back off instead of tighten the shoes.

Have fun and remember to double check your work your life depends on it.

Look at Raybestos site

Here's a mostly complete list of the parts that I used for a complete rebuild of my brakes. The drums were the costliest items, initially I was quoted over $100 per drum before I did an online search. Raybestos provided me with part numbers, a google search found great prices at Parts America (Schucks). I'd go to my local Schucks with printouts of the parts/prices from the partsamerica website, buy the parts and the local store would match the online prices.
If I remember right the rebuild came in at around $500 including new drums, a master cylinder rebuild kit, and everything else new except the steel brake lines. I added the auto-adjusting brakes like the other guys in the forum have.
I did have to go to several parts houses once the brake drums came in since I didn't want to wait for Schucks to bring parts in.
