Check engine light was on and OD off light was blinking for a long time with no loss in performance. I took it in to a dealer to read the code last week. They said the trans temp sensor and wiring harness needed to be replaced for $400. After they did that the check engine light and OD off light were still on. They told me that the computer hooked to these sensors had shorted out and needed to be replaced for another 400. Why didn't they know the computer was bad before they replaced the sensor and wiring harness? Did they fry my computer during their repair? Does anyone know where this computer is on the truck and if I could get one from a salvage yard?
Thanks.
if its like my truck its under the plastic panel next to the parking brake on the driver side. I replaced mine because when I got the truck used some dip **** mechanic put a junkyard one in it out of a ford sable v6. how it ran was beyond me. check the part store there only about 130 bucks. and stay away from ford dealerships the suck as far as im concerned
I started at a local repair shop. $40 to tell me there was a problem in the transmission and that I had to go to the dealership so they could read the code. I used to stay away from the dealership too, but now I'm not so sure. I don't see any computer circuit on my truck where you said yours was. What exactly did you replace?
I don't know where your computer is on your truck, mine is on the drivers side behind the firewall next to the parking brake. You access it through the engine bay, and pulling it out can be a pain as the fender can get in the way.
Before replacing anything else, I would get the codes off that computer and see what the heck it is telling you. There is a way to put these computers in a a short-test diagnostic mode where you can jiggle and move wires around and if it detects a short it will beep or throw a code for you depending on what type of code reader it has. I have a 20$ beep reader and I used it to find a short. If the dealership isn't telling you how they came to their conclusion I wouldn't trust them. Sending you back out with the same problem after spending $400 bucks is not what I would call paying attention to what the problem is.
