the 5.4 that could

i had a landscaping job to do and needed an excavator to do some dirt moving. well long story short im always reading this and that about how the fellas on here would never get the 5.4 cause it cant tow a lick of nothing...kinda reminded me of media propaganda. blah blah blah.... 10000lb total load. didnt hesitate to move it, didnt hesitate at 70mph...so to the guys that have dont have the 5.4 and never drove one.. it can and it will do what you want.

Nice! The 5.4 is always looked down on, but it has the same hp as a early 90's 460.

Funny I just towed a excavator the other day it weighed 9000 lbs. Truck and trailer weigh 9500 lbs. So it did fine and I love my old 99 it just keeps goin and goin.
By the way connected to any pickup 10k is plenty of weight.

Had an 05 F250 with 5.4 did a decent job towing 8000 lbs, when I got my 08 F350 got the V10 it does it with less effort and better fuel milage, the 5.4 would do it,but 15mpg empty to about 6mpg towing.

Yep, I think the 5.4L is a fine engine for towing, provided its not an everyday occurance. If I towed 8k+ once a week, I would opt for the V10 or PSD. I've towed several times with mine with as much as 8k pounds in the hills of WV. It never really struggled but I do have 4.10s which helps.

My record low MPG is 10.3 and that was while towing that 8k load I mentioned above.

Yeah, 10k is certainly nothing to sneeze at!

10k is nothing?? Since when.

Congrats on the tow! I had a V10 Excursion, and have driven many 5.4 F250's with loads. The 5.4's towed every bit as good as my Ex did. I don't think the V10 is much more than badging and bragging rights. That's just my opinion........and we all know what they say about opinions!

The only guys who give the 5.4 the credit it deserves, are the guys who own them. I love my little V8.

I know your opinion needs some math help. (IMHO )

2v to 2v, +60HP & +75lb ft is more than bragging rights.

3v to 3v, +62HP & +87 lb ft is more than badging.

Monsta, all I can tell you is that I owned one and drove a lot of the other. Couldn't tell the difference. That's fact. The numbers are what they are, that's fact too. But from the drivers seat........no difference.

Towed 14K with F250 w/5.4 & with F350 w/V10. Big difference. In all fairness, tho, the little 5.4 did do a good job and were it not for a rating thing and the fact that some portions of our towing involved 10% grades, would not have traded. But that extra 62 hp & 92 FtLbs torque come in handy.....and both got the same mileage towing and empty!
