very good idea Robin, I need to figure out something like that for my Fifth Wheel.
The mirror was left over from a fifth wheel application. I couldn't see my hitch. I used to mount it to the king pin with a bungee until I got rid of the large tool box that hung from the bed rails. I replaced that box with one that had a sloped top and sat on the bed floor. Then I could see the hitch. Now I no longer have the fifth wheel and wish I hadn't sold the old tool box.
I backup t0 a trailer everyday sometimes multiple times a day. I normally get the ball right under the hitch in my truck and even in my other truck that has a 100" wide flatbed on it with 4 foot sides and i get right to the ball. the trick is or at least what works for me is to know where your trailer sits when its hooked up to you. That way all you need are your mirrors, you then just eye up the the trailer in the center of your mirrors (the side ones) and reverse slowly until you tap the trailer. or another thing that ill do is keep the trailer about an inch below the top of the ball, that way as you reverse you can feel the truck dip down in the back then pop up. if it pops up then your good, your under the trailer. if not then try again.
Only occasionally i will miss and when i do, its like 6 times in/out of the truck, lol
