fuel gauge question

I have a 1985 f150 with the front side tank. I am trying to get my fuel gauge to work. I am able to access the sender by dropping the driveline and am able to reach sender from the top without dropping the tank. With a meter, is there a way to test the sender to see if it works? Thanks for any help.

ground the guage wire, guage should read full
if the guage reads full the problem will either be sender or ground going to it

Here's your alternative choices.

Ford lists two different fuel tank sizes and senders for your application.

(1985/86 F150/350 non EFI 6 or 8 cylinder gas engines exc. 460-mid-ship [front] tank)

E5TZ9275G .. Fuel Sender / Use with 19 Gallon Mid-Ship Tank

MSRP: $102.98 / ftepartsguy.com price: $74.15
----------------------------------------------
E5TZ9275H .. Fuel Sender / Use with 17 Gallon Mid-Ship Tank

MSRP: $151.00 / ftepartsguy.com price: $108.72
-----------------------------------------------
That 80 buck sender might be lookin' pretty good right now...

...but is it the correct one?

Thanks Bill for the research. I think I will be calling LMC TRUCK in the morning to make sure. Pretty sure I have the 17 gal tank as I have filled it from empty enough times. The number on my old sender is E5TE JA if that helps. Thanks

Ford lists a part number of E5TZ-9275-JA, but it's for an F250/F350 with a 351W 4V or 460...someone may have changed yours to this one years ago.

I have no cross reference, so I'll call a pal on Monday and verify that E5TE-JA engineering number translates to the E5TZ-JA part number.

This p/n is obsolete but 10 dealers across the US have one. Since it's not the right one, I personally wouldn't worry about it.
