Question regarding sunvisors

Here's the deal. I scrounged padded sunvisors from another truck and decided to clean up the pivots before reinstalling in my own truck. I also cleaned off the sticky gunk on the pivot pin. Now, the sunvisors hang straight down on the pivot pins and won't stay up. Was that gunk there for holding the visors in place? How brutal is that?

Anyways, anyone know how to rectify this situation?? Any advice is much appreciated.

Welcome to FTE

The "gunk" you cleaned off is there for lubricating the pivots. It's white lithium grease.

The visors hang down? How so, blocking the view out the windshield?

On the visors are (supposed to be) two short plastic rods with rubber tips on the end...these slide into the ends of the visors.

The tips at the end of the two visor rods fit into the center visor bracket, mounted above the inside mirror on the roof panel.

The rubber tips are important, because without them, the visors will not stay in the up position, and will flop down.

Just about every Ford car from 1965 and F Series Truck/Econoline/Bronco from 1967 and thru today use those same rubber tips, so they are available from Ford > >

D1DZ6204115A .. Visor Tip / MSRP: $4.12 / ftepartsguy.com price: $2.96

FTE has Ford dealer parts department sponsors that give discounts on parts to FTE members.

Re: Questions regarding sunvisors

Thanks for the welcome and the fast reply!!

Your explanation sure makes sense. I didn't install the inside pivot pins and rubber boots, so that could be why the visors are flopping around (they just hang down in the "blocking the sun" position). It's funny though, they used to stay where you put them even when they were pulled out of the center holder. That grease was really sticky so it seemed to hold the visors where I positioned them. I'll try putting the center piece/boots in and see what happens....

Thanks again!

Re: Questions regarding sunvisors

Another thing.. This probably explains why my visors always worked their way into the down position when I drove on rough roads. My visor tips are all dried out and cracked. They probably weren't holding the visors very well...
