Alright, everyone seems to be having PSOM problems, myself included. I have changed the psom with 3 diffirent ones. Some work better than others, but all sway, and make cruise control a joke.
I had my truck at the dealership for a week and thew couldn't figure it out. They changed the tone ring, the sensor and the psom, and checked all the wires. All to no avail. (they also tried charging me for all of it, also to no avail
I have an idea. What if I were to change the tail housing on the transfer case in echange for one with a speed sensor?
I am thinking I could just run the rear ABS wires to it. Wouldn't it act the same? I mean that was how it was set up on my ranger.
Just a thought. Any ideas or points of interest would be appreciated.
The ABS won't get a good enough signal from the transmission VSS. The transmission mounted VSS should be good enough for cruise, and maybe the speedometer if you can get the correct conversion in there. It's a matter of pulses per revolution and whether or not the signals are compatible. I'm thinking you'll have a hard time making it work.
You need to get a PSOM3 level cluster. It was a 3rd generation PSOM. It samples the pulse more times than the older PSOMs. May also want to check the air gap between the tone ring and the RABS. It should be 0.38-0.51mm (0.015-0.020"). I actually had to file my sensor down to get the air gap correct. It did help mine considerably. It's not totally gone, but I can use my cruise and it doesn't waiver much anymore.
I got this info from Article No. 96-21-11
My 95 is not a PSOM3, so I'm assuming it's 96-97. Maybe they even came out with it after that as a fix. It is in a service bulletin. My PSOM was checked out and deemed fine from an independent shop. Ford Trucks
I still had the problem, so I dug deeper and adjusted the air gap. I did hook the RABS to an oscillascope. While driving, you could see where the PSOM was getting a bad reading as the scope would fluctuate. My tone ring may have a flaw in it, but I'm not about to replace until the rear end goes out.
We aren't talking about 1st and 2nd generation Lightning. I think we are talking different generations of the 92-96 instrument clusters. At least that is what I thought we were talking about.
The Article No. 96-21-11 says:
Note
Dealership must tell the odometer exchange center that you need a PSOM3 level cluster for a speedometer needle waver concern.
I too prefer the Lightning PSOM. I have one that I got on ebay in my truck. Its a low mileage one. It is much better than the 85 mph cluster.
The issue though is that apparently there are 3 different generations of PSOMs for 92-96 trucks. I do know that 92-93, 94-95, and 96 are three different clusters that will not all interchange. Are these the same three generations of PSOM? If so, how would you make a 3rd generation one work in place of a 2nd generation one?
