turbo purchase/???

turbo purchase/???

I know I have seen all types of questions about turbo charging these older diesels like my '89 7.3 with 177,000 miles..but I can't remember the answer to the one about what is too many miles to turbo??....This motor uses no oil every 5000 miles...has a new cam and lifters about 30,000 miles ago...I have put about 40,000 miles on it since december of '03..It runs strong...Have just got it painted...looks real good...came into some extra cash lately and thought a turbo would be a nice touch....After all it's the best Christmas present I've received in many years....But, didn't want to throw the money away if this might shorten the lifespan drastically??....Any input would be appreciated...Thanks!!

For normal driving, my opinion is that a turbo diesel will always outlive a N/A diesel if both are working as hard. The turbocharger will help control EGTs better than if the engine were N/A.

The life span of these engines is determined mainly by how well they are cared for more than how many miles they have racked up. It sounds like your engine is in good shape, and I would not hesitate to add a turbo.

Ok...I'm a dummy...EGT's???...thanks for the advice...I'm not hard on one ...pull a camper a bit, but would like to tow it out west next year for a couple of weeks...a little more power would be good for such a haul...

EGT is your exhaust gas tempeture. If it gets to hot you can melt your pistons. A turbo with a correctly set Injection pump can actually lower your EGT from it factory form actually making the engine run cooler.. I put a bankes sidewinder kit on mine and it works great and pulls much better. I wouldn't worry about your engine, it sounds like it is in good shape.. I would just keep the boost below 10 to 12 psi so you don't run the risk of blowing a head gasket. My egts are around 600 on the highway and I have not broke 900 degrees F yet.
