I can save you a lotta trouble...I have access to every FoMoCo dealers parts inventory...can tell you in what city the parts are located, the dealer names and phone numbers.

I can also list all the FoMoCo part numbers from 1928 thru 2001.

2 square head bolts on 1966 steering column

I am quoting from this old thread because I also have an issue with those two little square head bolts that come through the column section that sits between the shift collar and the wheel. I just replaced the shift collar on my 66 f100 (3-spd). As Danger Dave says, taking the two nuts off is easy. But once I went to reassemble I was unclear about how these bolts went back in and what purpose they served. If I put the bolts in the piece and tightened the nuts first, the piece would'nt go back on as the bolt heads were in the way. If I just left them out altogether it went back on easy. But I'm thinking they must serve some purpose. Danger Dave, or anyone else, what do these bolts do? and how do I get these bolts back in and still be able to get the coupling on?

Since my truck is a 66, I guess I should have posted this in the 61-66 Forum. I'll repost it there.

Yep, those two stinking little square bolts are why going into the column usually takes hours...poor engineering and probably why Ford redesigned their columns. You have to start the nuts on the bolts, hold them straight and square (good luck) while you align the collar and then with your fourth hand squeeze the bolts toward the steering shaft so the square bolts will catch in their keepers. Good luck.

Just called a dealership for the upper bearing retainer and was told it's obsolite.

They can get the bearing C3DZ-3517-A
But I was just told the retianer B1AZ-3518-A was obsolite

Can you help me out on this issue?
Thank you

Would these parts also be correct for a '74 or '75 non tilt colunm also? Going to be rebuilding one for my disk brake swap at some point.

I got this part through partsguyed.com about a year ago when I went to my local dealership they gave me a cold shoulder and said none of the parts I needed were available even with part numbers in my hand I ordered them off of that site got them in acouple days and no problems you may need to try a different dealer or just go online on your question about using these parts on your 74 or 75 these parts will not be for your column they were redesigned these years. Unless you have one of these columns your going to use these part numbers are useless Both upper bearing and retainer fit: 1966 F100 4WD-UPPER only / 1967/72 F100/250 4WD-UPPER only / 1961/72 F100/250 2WD Upper/Lower / 1966/74 Bronco w/M/S Upper/Lower / Myriad 1950's/60's Passenger Cars and etc etc etc!

Question. I have a 72 F100 with power steering, automatic. I am replacing the steering shaft (threads are stripped for steering wheel). The shaft in there now has a inner bearing race that is pressed/welded on the shaft. Do you know where I can get a replacement race? the shaft I am replacing it does not have one on it.

Thanks

Question Numbers Dummy, clarification please:Steering column lower bearing

These two parts may be all you need to fix the problem, maybe not.

These two parts are still available from Ford

C3DZ3517A.. Bearing / MSRP: $3.75 / ftepartsguy.com price: $ 2.70

B1AZ3518A .. Retainer / MSRP: $ 2.33 / fteparts guy's price: $ 1.68.

At the bottom of the column is another bearing and retainer, the column needs to be pulled to replace these.

D0AZ3517A.. Bearing-Steering Column lower ~ 4WD only

C6TZ3518A.. Retainer-Steering Column Bearing-lower ~ 4WD only

(1965/72 2WD's use the same parts top & bottom)

There's no such thing as a bearing retainer that needs to be welded in, that total BS!

I have the parts catalog illustration, the lower retainer for the bearing nestles in between the mast jacket and the steering shaft.

Illustration: For $22.00 you can buy a CD copy of the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog from hipoparts.com, also sold on ebay.

Every part is illustrated, so the catalog can also be used as an assembly/dis-assembly manual.

Parts catalog exploded view (illustration) of the 4WD steering column: Section 35, page 9.
Hey ND. I pulled my column and pulled it apart to do anything it might need besides a paint job. It looks like my bearing retainer ( cup? ) is spot welded in. Is the bearing press fit in?

BTW, should this bearing have some grease? Mine is bone dry.

Here are some pic's

The Bearing just pushes into the bearing flange on my column but mine id 4wd has a rubber dust boot covering the bearing that just rides up into the welded flange.

Yours does look a little different tho.

The bearing comes packed with white lithium grease, there's no way to repack it.

What year is your truck, 2WD or 4WD?

It's a 72 f250 4x2

The bearings, both upper and lower seem pretty tight and rotate smoothly. It looks like I could get a med. gauge hypodermic needle in there to put the grease in.

Or do you recommend just replacing them? I haven't checked on price. Can I get these out myself?
