Hey Guys,
I've been working on getting my '84 6.9 torn down after locking it up. Today, I finally got to the bottom end and it doesn't look good. Once I got the oil pan off I saw quite a bit of metal shavings in the bottom. I looked at the bottom of the rods and all looked good........accept two. They looked like they got pretty hott!!!!! I took off the rod caps and found (what I kinda figured) two badly worn rod bearings. It seems to be that they both spun and that the rod side bearing slipped under the two cap side bearings and actually got hot enough to almost weld them together or something. Well anyway it doesn't look good. I wanted to know where do I go from here? As far as I can tell the cylinder walls look ok and the rest of the bearings are good. As for the crank.....it looks chewed up where those bearings spun. I'm looking for some advise here. I do have another engine that I'm gonna get going and put back in my truck but I wanted to know if I could save the original engine.
The rod ends may be an issue as wel, my experience on gassers indicates that when they spin a bearing, it tends to oversize the rod end a bit, so either replacement or resizing will be needed as well. It depends how much material they need to take off the crank to save it as to how salvageable it is.
Had a similar situation with a small 4cyl diesel. I had the crank shaved down 30 thou and the machine shop was able to track down a replacement conrod and piston assembly for me (used). The engine I was working on was quite rare, but you should have no problem getting a replacement conrod or even crank if you need it.
I would opt to replace the conrods if any are damaged because they tend to wear uneven and are cheaper to replace, but check the clearance of the crank journals to see how much material is lost. Or just take it to a good machinist to see what can be done (thats what I did).
Looked into the damage a little more today and it looks like the rods are junk and that there is a lot of damage to the crank journal. I'm taking the crank to an engine guy sometime this week to let him access the damage. For now, it looks like i'm getting the other engine ready to put in the truck even though I probably won't be able to afford to drive it. Diesel price here today.....$4.99/gal. Might as well bend over and take it.........
