Freight Train

When towing a heavy load, my 6.4 at times begins to ROAR like a freight train. Its not just the normal noise from the turbo's. It sounds like a huge vacuum leak. Sound familiar to anybody??? Don't get any fault codes so I'm guessing its normal... Thanks, Greg

It's the cooling fan. There is a clutch that only engages the fan when it's needed. It makes A LOT of noise when the fan is turning at high RPM. It's normal.

I agree, it is the fan, the first time it kicked on while I was towing my wife got worried. I had heard fans kick on like it before so realized what it was immediately and was able to quell her worries.

Yes, thought a jet was landing on my trailer towing up the hills in the Poconos. Surprised it only came on about 6 times towing in 90* weather last summer. Thats a good thing when it comes on to keep the Motor cool.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I've made several runs pulling 14k trailer over the passes in Wa. This was the first time I heard this noise...I'd be surprised if any fan can make this noise... I'll keep an eye on the error codes and update. Thanks, Greg

Last year I passed a couple of BP stations off of 84 that had USLD. Filled at Port Jervis, NY on the Boarder was the best price

It is the fan! When that baby kicks on it is most definitely like a jet engine and you can't not notice. Last summer towing 20k all over AZ in 100-120* heat it would kick on occasionaly but certainly not as much as I would think it should. 70-75 mph, A/C on, 20k behind it, 120* heat and its not even getting hot enough to keep the fan on. I think that is pretty good.

I have only had the fan kick on a couple of times out of several hard pulls in Oregon Nevada and California pulling 14-16k.

Mine overheated

Last week while work hours I was pulling my 2000 pounds trailer in 8 grade hill and my truck overheated . On memorial weekend went to the forrest pulling my Rv (10500 pounds) and she lost power. Also from 0 milles to 30 vibrates. My 4x4 failed. It stuck in 4x4 low. To finish on my way home, my truck ran about 70 milles in regeneration. she drank about 3/4 tank of diesel in only 70 milles. I'm very frustatde. I really miss my 99 f 250.

I monitered my coolant temp with the Edge Juice w/Attitude and noticed the pcm only starts locking up the fan clutch when the coolant temp gets to around 222-225 deg. I started to get concerned myself when towing up a long 6% grade and the engine temp got to 220 with no clutch lockup but once it got to 225 the fan clutch started locking up, the fan quickly came up to speed and the coolant temp quickly dropped to under 210. I would rather the fan come on at around 215, but its good to know it can cool down the the engine that fast.
