are all flywheels the same?

Are all flywheels diamaters the same for all FE's. Is there a diference in car and truck flywheels? I got a clutch kit from NAPA and they said the book and computer called for a 12" clutch. but the pressoir plate was to big for the flywheel I got that I was told was off a 71 f350 FE 390. I brought home the (smaller engine) kit that fit the flywheel. Is NAPA wrong, the book said the 390 400 429 460 were all the same.I told the guy that the 390 should not be part of that list.

There are different flywheels for different sized clutches plus the 428s and 410s use and external balanced flywheel (off set balance) while the rest are all balanced straight up.

According to some here, the flywheel will interchange between engine families. No one has called BS on it yet, so we'll see what happens with that.

Like Bear said, they are drilled for the different clutch diameters. This I do know firsthand. Also, what Bear said about the external balance stuff! It's special enough that you'd only buy it if you want it, or nobody notices it's different.

The only other thing I can add is a year break between (I think) '64 and '65. The tooth count is different between early and late flywheels/flex plates. From your info this is not a concern.

352/360/390 flywheels

There's no such thing as a 12" clutch used on any 390 engine, even the HiPo's.

Ask that genius at NAPA to look in his book/computer again. He (or his sources are) confusing the 390 FE engine with the 330 FT engine which uses a 12" clutch: 1964/78.

Thanks Bill that's what I wanted to hear! So as long as the clutch kit fits the FE flywheel I shouldn't have any problems bolting the engine and trans together? Also is there a spacer between the bell and engine? If there is do I need halve to use it?

There is a steel plate that fits between the block and the flywheel. I've never not used one so don't know if you can cheat and leave it off.

C3AZ-7007-F .. Plate-Engine-Rear Obsolete (C3AZ-7007-F replaced C3AZ-7007-D & E)

Fits FE engines with a manual transmission: 1965/76 F100/350 / 1963/71 passenger cars

No Ford dealer has one, Green Sales' and Dennis Carpenters NOS parts websites don't show one either.

Junkyard only item.

Or ebay. There are 2 kinds of block plates. Thru 68 the FE's used cup plugs to plug the lifter galleys and sit somewhat flush. The plates have only the round hole cut out for the cam plug. 69 and later FE's used threaded plugs that stick out a bit and these plates have 3 holes for the threaded plugs in the lifter galleys but have no cutout for the cam plug. I've had some plates that had both cam plug hole and lifter galley plug holes that were possibly a generic service item?? Anyway if your block has the threaded plugs you can use an earlier plate and just drill the three holes needed for the plug clearnace. I used to think the plates without the three holes were for solid lifter blocks where the lifter passages are not drilled and plugged. But I was corrected and told what's posted which makes sense somewhat I suppose. Either way you need the plate and they are easy to find. It's a $20 item not the crazy money some ask.

According to my younger son, leaving off that plate (spacer) was what was causing a terrible sound from the starter on a (guy we know) Ford pickup. They were ready to stab the transmission when my son mentioned the plate... "don't need it" said the owner. LOL :)

Don't wanna get into a p!ssing contest....one a my finest attributes or detriments-depending on how you look at it.

The 1965/72 car // 1965/72 & 1973/79 truck parts catalogs show exactly one plate, this one: C3AZ-7007-F.

The 1960/64 car catalog shows three, the first two (C3AZ-7007-D or E) were replaced by the third, same # I just typed above.

Could it be that the two plates you've had experience with been in fact one of the two early ones and the late one?

Lotta parts swapping around since day one, and there's no numbers on these plates...my guess is...that is exactly what happened.

I dunno Bill? Never really paid much attention to them before. I'd certainly take your word on it knowing the real facts. Your right with no numbers stamped on any of them it's hard to tell what's what and where it came from. I was hoping you'd chime in and shed some light on the subject. Interesting facts that's for sure.

Doesn't look like I'll be taking my bell housing off anytime soon. :)
(since I put that 6303 sealed ball bearing in the crankshaft!:)

Used-to it was an every 25k mile project! :/

Anyway, I might be losing my little mind betting with Bill. :/
...but I'd bet money there are numbers on my spacer-plate. :)

Since it's Bill, I'd better not go more than a dollar? ;)

PS- Of course we are talking about a Ford part here...
Like my Chevy-buddies used-to tell me...
"Ford never learned how to make the same part twice ;)"
