What kind of *sound* are you looking for?
I would never put speakers in the back (besides subs), but that's me.
I believe in a good *soundstage*. ie one driver on the left and one on the right. With good phase equalization.
You'll get no *good* bass out of 6x8's.
The head unit is the most important part, since it is the source of everything. Spend your money there.
Look for a Burr-Brown DAC and very little noise, THEN look at options.
If you want good sound that is, making noise is cheap and easy.
country has some of the best bass
I wanted to point out that having some vocals coming from the back will make a soundstage impossible to see. Furthermore, The speakers in the back will cause phase problems where you are in the driver's seat. Making tuning an impossible task. Speakers in the back give me a headache, after all, do you go to a concert and stand with your back to the show? Its just not natural for me, but some people like, apparently.
i agree but tend to think in a regular cab truck it doesnt matter since the speakers are so close and its more like a surround sound effect. in mine all my speakers are pretty close to the driver and passenger so it evens out well. but in my moms car i have the fade set 3/4 for the front cuz it messes with the whole sound stage. i have also been in a explorer with aftermarket speakers n amp n all and they had it set at 50/50 for passengers but up front it gave me a headach and didnt sound all that good, kinda blurred sound. some people leave the stockers in back and leave em at 1/4 volume of the total volume to give a little sound for the passengers.
Yea, I hate that blurred sound. All I aim to do, Is reverse the recording process, but only at higher spl levels. Most recordings are made in stereo (ie 2 mics - 1 left and 1 right). I just want to reverse this process, 1 left and 1 right. One point of sound origin on each side, otherwise its a smear of sound that is no more exciting to me than than twirling on my tippy toes till I can't stand up.
id recommend a pioneer alpine sony ect head unit with atleast 35x4 max pwr. that way you get 17watts per channel constant. as for back speaker not really all that important but not bad to have. they just need to filterd so they either dont respond to mid and high freqs or quite. but your font speakers need to have all that they can get. they need to be 2 or 3 ways (although the diff between a 2 and a 3 way speaker is just looks) i would also look into doing a size upgrade. i had to do one in my moms cougar not that hard just time consuming. 6x9 give a good sound for their size. or id look into the possibilites of a set of 8 or 10 inch subs since you dont want it rattle everything but want nice sound. youll need an amp for that though but not a huge one.
Hey Bill, I was curious, what does modified jenson amp mean? Did you solder in better coils or transistor or something or just replace the fuse with a higher amp one?
Now, I have a modified Kicker zr360 amp. I had a buddy from Stillwater designs (maker of Kicker) build one up to put out a little more power than its supposed to. I'm getting around 550w out of it. Maybe that's what he meant.
Boy, you really get around. Stillwater is pretty cool. Never ran their stuff though, the PPI put out a bit more and cost about the same and had a LR xover and 18db boost with Q settings built in, so.... I don't think Kicker does that.
I kinda like the MMATs amps too. Those class D ones. They put out some juice and run cool. I've heard stories of guys getting 1700 rms out of those things. And I can't say enough about the Juggernaut 15", man that thing pounds. Hook 2 MMATs amps to ONE Jugger and you'll never want anything more. I'll run you out of the car. You can't fry it, you can't kill it, you can't find it either, that factory is so far behind on orders. I wanted one 2 yrs ago and still nobody carries them, they got names like earthquake and so on with those super big surrounds on them. Those I don't know about, they may be good, but a couple years back, a guy with an astrovan set a new spl record with only 12 of those juggers and 24 amps, putting the PPI Grandma in the museum.
The reason i dont want the subs in my car is because i am using it all the time. Dont have any good places to put the amp that will always have a good air flow. also i dont want to deal with a sub box, taking it out of my car all the time.
Oh yea, I can see that, subs take up lots of room in the car as well as in the wallet. Plus, they take lots of time. Then they wear your alternator, hurrying another c-note from your wallet. And the likelyhood is you'll only spark an interest and never be quite satisfied until you're the loudest, clearest sounding system on the block.
