The infamous ENGINE light

I've got a 1988 F250 7.3L IDI 4x4 and the engine light is on. I looked in the manual and it shows a self test input connector having a BLK/WHT wire going to it and then another test connector with WHT/RED and PNK/LT GRN wires.
I'm looking under the dash on the drivers side and the only connector I can find is one with a ORANGE/BLK wire.
Under the hood I found a connector with WHT/RED and BLK wires.
Could these be what I'm looking for and what kind of risk is there in running the diags if these aren't the correct wires.

I know I don't have a check engine light.
If you are talking about your OBD 1 connections, they should be on the drivers side right by the firewall.
If you are using an OBD 1 scanner, you should be able to easily insert the wires into the scanner.
If you are using a volt meter, just test it out.

I don't see any harm in the attempt.

I don't think the OBD connectors came around until the 90's. According to the manual this s one where you make a connection and the engine light will flash a code explaining what the problem is.
This has really got me puzzled. Anyone out there have experience doing this on an 1988?

these trucks are mechanica...no computerl, so the engine light is set off by the oil pressure sendor or temp sending AFAIK.

obd-1 was on gasline engines...i think the PSD had thier own set of codes.

OBD 1 / EEC IV was used only on idi,s with automatic transmission
it is not connected to the check engine light
the check engine light is connected to the temp/oil senders

I took a look at the temp and oil sensors. The temp sensor looked newer so I tested the oil pressure switch and sure enough it tested bad. I just replaced it (only $8) and the infamous ENGINE light is out!

Wow, I learned something!!! Nice to know. i would have never guessed that it actually monitored those sensors. Does your engine light normally turn on when you turn the key on then go off. I just turned my key on and I guess it don't light up cause I couldn't find it.

Bulb may be burned out when i had my dash apart I noticed a few burnt bulbs. They all should light up when the key is turned on for a bulb check, still our truks may not have them.

on the 88 diesel, the CEL is only turned on by the oil pressure and coolant temp switches.
