Anyone have 31 spline axles in their 9" rear end ??
Or come across any 31 spline axles that fit up 1972 Ford trucks ??
I have 3 3rd members, all 31 spline and my truck has 28 spline axles.
Richard.
1968/72 was the only years 31 splined axles shafts were offered for F100's prior to 1972.
The rear end is classfied as a 9" but the ring gear is 9 3/8."
When the 9 3/8" rear axle is present, the internal parts are all different from trucks with the 9" rear end produced before 1968 or after 1972.
I have the 31 spline axles from the 9 3/8 rear in both my F100's, a 68 4x4 on 35's and a 70 2wd. The 70 has a detroit locker and the 68 is open, but I always wanted a locker for it too. I considered a later model 9" rear, as many of those were 31 spline but they are 4" wider as I recall. The 31 spline axles are much stronger, no necking down for the splines like the 28's. It's kind of hard to find the 9 3/8 rears that have the correct length axles, but worth it if you want a strong 9" rear.
I guess i have 3 of the 31 spline axles one came from a1972 the other from a 1968 or 69 the other from another 1972 . Don't guess i can use them after reading the earler post by partsman. Iwas going use them on a 1961 and a1965

What ratio's are the 3rd members? Are they open, locker? I have an 81 f100 that a few years ago I thought was the same as the f150, but after some research I found I had a 9in with 31 spline axles and 4.5 bolt pattern. It has something like 2.42's in it, ugh.....and its open.....ugh
