cowl vent handle question

Has anyone redesigned the vent handle so it could be use with a lower dash extension WITHOUT cutting the extension. I would like to reshape it so it would stay under the dash when the vent is closed and stiil be reachable when the vent is open. I know there are electric ways to do this but I would prefer the manual way if possible. any ideas? thanks

How about bolting a small piece of steel to the handle? If it were shaped like an upside-down L, then you could still reach it after you install the dash extension and the end would not hit the wall when you opened it. I used the electric conversion because I enclosed the area under the dash. Good luck, Jag

Modifying the handles is fairly easy IF you have the right materials.

On my 51, I'm not sure what dwarf designed the cowel vent handle location, but every time I bent over to open the vent, a substantial part of my anatomy got caught in the steering wheel - especially when I went to close it again.

So, when I was at the car parts swap meet, I bought some of those brazing rods you can use on aluminum and pot metal, and I set out to modify my handle.

One of th ebiggest challenges is getting th estupid handle off. Worse is it's also that "high grade" Ford pot metal that won't work with you at all. I mean pot metal is bad enough but did Ford go out and buy up everything else that no one would use....Wow!

Anyway, I used the new rods with a plumbers propane torch, just flashing on and off of it, and it worked great. I don't have any "in work" pics, just a final that I'll post.

I would imagine you could customize the handles any way you want if you have the materials.

Here's the pic:

Good Luck Julllls

Like the duct tape? I finally peeled the rest of it off. I left it over the old screw holes while I was filling them up from the other side. Then I sprayed Zolatone on both sides of the firewall. Too lazy to feather out all the dings.

There's a trivia blast from the past. How many of you guys actually know what Zolatone is?

J!
