Would anybody have an experience with AutoZone GP Sorenson/carb kits?
It's only $26 compared to over $120 for a NAPA kit. I have a 1480C possibly with a power valve issue and this kit looks like it has a power valve in it. My power valve is a two stage and fetches $35 elswhere. Somehow the math doesn't add up unless I was a Republican. Also would most carb rebuilders have the tool to test my power valve? Thanks...
My problem with the GP Sorenson kits on Holleys is the needle and seat design for the external adjustable styles will strip the bowls if you aren't careful. the other issue I have run into with them is the gasket material used on the bowl/metering block/metering body gaskets. They tend to be too soft. I personally prefer to use Holley kits on Holley carburetors. To test your power valve, apply vacuum to it and see if it holds, or, when you take the carb apart, if you find gas in the power valve cavity, it's most likely bad. I used to own a carburetor shop that was a Holley warranty center, so I have seen plenty of mistakes on Holleys (and others) over the years.
I doubt that the Sorenson kits have the correct power valve included--if any, just a one-size-fits-all version (might even be a single stage rather than the two-stage as original). There are many different power valve numbers and you want the correct one for your particular carburetor number (carburetor numbers are stamped into the airhorn) for best performance. I think that's why Holley and Walker don't include them in their kits. 4180's were used on a wide varity of vehicles and engines therefore the need for different power valves. Different power valves open at different vacuum levels and can effect power and mileage.
thanks for the responses....With the x rated test of the valve, it passes the vaccume test so it must either be the float level or an internal leak. thanks again and a great site for information.....
The Holley kits I usually buy have the power valve, and sometimes several different ones. You will need the list number (will either be R-xxxx or O-xxxx) and may be 5 numbers instead of 4.
