What about old Fords?

My dad has a '79 Ford tractor that was his dad's. 2 cylinder n/a diesel. My dad told me it has glow plugs (it must have something, he can start it in the winter), no block heater or anything though.

Amazing what a hit of snort will do for a cold diesel.

Nothing quite like hearing one of the Steigers on the farm with the V12 Detroit fire up cold

they were a dealer built thing with a 337 scraper motor and the trans modified so you had 5 reverse gears and a clutch/tourque converter.ours we changed the trans around and took off the push cup off and put a blade and c-frame back on so we could grade up the cut between scrapers.

ok,must have been similar to the 9U WD-6 that a florida dealer built many years ago to use in cane fields, looked to have had a modified grader chain case hooked to the final drives

not quite. a pony motor is a small gas engine used in place of an electric starter.

Hi tractorfans, I need your assistance if possible, I am building a website especially for tractor videos, to date I have gathered 357 individual agricultural tractor males and I hope to record every tractor make and model ever made. I am especially looking for videos and pictures of rare vintage tractors, such as Graham Bradley, Fairbanks Morse or Minneapolis-Moline. If you can help, drop me a line at admin (at) youtractor.com. Any content you provide will remain your property and you will be credited with it.

I look forward to hearing from you

Everythings pretty well explained except the Johnson Bar( also known as slide bar),that was the forward/reverse lever for the transmission

The name Johnson came from the Cat engineer that developed the particular invention
Another of his inventions for Cat was the Johnson selfloading scraper,in the early days was called a johnson as in 621 johnson which was a 21 yard selfloader in the later years just the J was used ie 613J 618J 623j etc

I now have a job farming for a neighbor. My dad's '58 730D had a block heater, no other starting aids. My neighbor's 4020D has none that i know of. His 4440 & 4640 both have ether starting aids. Poof of black smoke and they start right up.....it was 39 degrees.

JohnDeere 30, 40, 50, 55, and 60 series tractor were set up thru the attenuator to provide full throttle fuel (even with throttle lever at idle) on start up. That is why you get the rapid acceleration and heavy black smoke on start up.

At home we've got a Farmall 560 and 706 that both use glow plugs. The difference between theirs and a pickups was that where the pickup had a light that goes out when its okay to start, the tractors have a button you hold in for 10-15 seconds with a glow plug gauge next to it.
