The New Holland Boomers have glow plugs. They start just like our trucks, turn the key on and waite till the light turns off to start. I have the 5325 John Deere and I have glow plugs for cold starts in the winter. Push the key in to start the glow plugs.

In my younger years I ran a D8 dozer which had a pony motor to start the main engine.

yep the first one I ran didn't even have electric start on the pony motor
think in '64 ot '65 they put direct start on the smaller motors but D8s and D9s didn't get eletric start til in the '70s
now operators bitch if they don't have A/C

Wonder what they would do without rollover protection, ac, etc. AHH back to bare skin and a ball cap.

IH uses precombustion chambers in a lot of thier engines and these require glow plugs to start. Cat uses a nichrome wire heater in the air intake to heat incoming air. Some of the engines I have driven on older trucks had glow plugs in them, most do not. Now a days a more common feature is a block heater you plug in when at home and when away from home if they have a sleeper with a tripac unit, it is water cooled tied into the main engines block and keeps the main engine warm while suppling heat/cooling and power to the sleeper. You can also have a starting fluid dispenser that is triggered from the cab if you don't have glow plugs or air heaters.

the parts on a caterpillar machine refered to as johnson are named after a caterpillar engineer, can't remember fist name but last was johnson
he designed much of cat equipment including their selfloading scraper ie 631J etc, 6=scraper 31 =yardage J=johnson or self loading

Those old corn binders were prone to cracking heads. Run it out of fuel once, and the head cracked. I put many an hour on an old TD18, and except for the magneto I remember them being fairly reliable. The injector pop-off pressure was insanely low too -something like 500-1000 psi.

I put a lot of hours on an old D-8 and a 5020 John Deere. I guess that explains why I can't hear worth a hoot today.

Actually that is an intake grid heater. I don't know of any newer John Deere tractors that have glow plugs.

That is a "cold weather" option for my tractor, which I don't have. The John Deere dealer did install a block heater though. That's all I need when really cold out. I run a synthetic 5W-40 oil too.

I probably have the same engine (family) as you.
3cyl Powertech turbo diesel 64HP.

OK. I never have to use the heater so I thought they were glow plugs. Mine is the new 5 cyl turbo, 68 HP.

EDIT: I have a pic in my gallery of the tractor on the trailer.

it depends on the brand of tractors John Deeres have glow plugs and block heaters. Cases dont usually have glow plugs, newer New Hollands (and fords) im not sure about. Cases dont have glow plugs because they usually start nicely with out them in the winter down to -10 or -20 degrees after that you need to plug their block heaters in. trust me i live on a wisconsin dairy farm and we have John Deeres and Cases.
