How in the heck........

do you get the gas line connectors to come apart, I have the tools! This is on an 87 F-150 w/ a 302. I put the "whatever it is called on the connector and pushed it in and line will not come apart. Any trick or am I doing something wrong? Any pics to make sure i am trying to take it apart in the correct location.

Please help!

Yeah.. they can be difficult. Put the tool around the connector and push it in. Now grab the tool and one side of the line with one hand, and the other side of the line with the other hand. First push the lines together like you are connecting them, and then pull apart.

if the lines have been connected for a long time try spraying some penetrating fluid on first and let sit then try what conanski said

they get stuck.. sometimes you have to try a couple different tools before one gets in there and releases it all the way. You have to push the fitting towards the filter first (I am assuming you are at the filter?) for there to be enough room for the clips to release, if you just pull, or try to just pull the line off with the tool, it will never let go... insert the tool, and hold the tool in while you push the other direction on the fitting, then push them together, if that makes sense. (push the fitting onto the tool more than the tool into the fitting so you keep that line pushed on as far as it can go, and maintain the room it needs to release the clips.) The tool will usually bottom out in the fitting when you are far enough in. (at least the ones I use do.) then slide the tool with the fitting back until the tool hits the bead on the line, then pull the fitting off the tool/line.

Hope that made sense...

Wouldn't an '87 have duckbill connectors, rather than garter spring connectors? My '89 has duckbills at the fuel pumps and filter (dunno about the injector rails...never had them apart yet). If I'm right, then all you need to do is pry the duckbill-lookin' plastic piece out of the connector with a screwdriver, and pull the line off the fitting. Rust has a way of working into both types of connectors, so some penetrating oil won't hurt either way.

I'm not sure when Ford quit using duckbills on the trucks...might have been one of those things that was gradually phased out. My '91 Crown Vic has garter spring connectors at the injector rails and the fuel pump, but duckbills on the fuel filter, so go figure...

my 88 has the clips, duck bills, whatever you want to call them, and all i have to do is take some pliers and slide then off or away from the connectors,, and to reinstall you just slide new one on the hose and snap the fuel filter together..........there should be a little hook that you can grab a hold of on the clip as long as nobody has broke it off already....

Give the tool and the line a twist while pushing the connection together, then twist while pulling apart. The fuel rail uses the spring type connectors on an 87, but like others have said, the other connections use the duck-bill clips.

So is it the fuel filter where you are disconnecting the lines, or somewhere else?

I am trying to disconnect them up by the intake manifold...kinda on the backside of the intake. I am pulling the motor out, I am about ready to just cut the lines since I am sending whats left of the truck to the Scrapyard! I was just trying to salvage them in case someone could use the motor parts I am taking off!
Thanks

I believe there was a recall on ford trucks around 87 for this very thing and that is probably why you may be finding different setup for it cause my 87 has the duck bills

You do need the tool to disconnect the fuel rail. It should be 3/8" on the inlet and 5/16" on the return. Do you have the metal scissors-type tool, or plastic pieces? Insert the tool and pull towards the fuel rail while twisting the tool, then twist and pull the fuel line to release. Those connections can get a little tight due to the o-rings, but with some patience and a little coaxing it should eventually come off. There is a metal safety clip that I think you've already removed, so it should just be a matter of engaging the tool and getting the o-rings to let go.
