Ok i have a 1982 F-100 with a 302 ci motor. My rear main seal is leaking and i was wondering should i drop the transmission or should i pull the radiator and motor. I was thinking dropping the transmission would be easier. but wouldnt give me as much room to work with under the truck. any body have experience with changing the rear main seal. and also i should add it is a 2 piece seal.
I did a stick to auto change in my truck and did the seal while I was there I would have to say dropping the trans would be easier. I did mine up on ramps and when I took the trans out you could acually sit up in there to work on it.
my vote go's for dropping the trans plenty of room to change... also i might add a buddy of mine leaked for years other then adding oil every week it lasted many moons guess it depends on loss of oil and funds in the pocket..~lol~
With a two piece seal, you do not have to pull the engine or the tranny. Just jack the engine up, pull the oil pan, take the rear main bearing cap off, and half the seal will come out with that. Then shove the upper part of the seal around while turning the engine. Getting the upper seal half out is the hard part, but there are several different methods to grab it and pull it out. Here's a link on how to do it.
I just recently attempted this. I jacked by engine up, and supported it with 2x4's between frame mount and engine. The engine couldn't go any higher. I couldn't get my pan off though. Maybe you have a smaller bellhousing than my truck. Something I still need to deal with! :-(
well im actually now thinking about not replacing it for a while it isnt leaking as much as it was before its the craziest thing it for a while was leaking fairly good amounts now its leaking like hardly ever

When I swapped in a 351w in my 1980, I had to change the oil pan, and repair the damaged dipstick tube that came with the rear sump pan. I did some research on how much oil this engine was supposed to take with a filter change, and everyone kept saying 6 quarts. So I set it up for 6 quarts, and oil would pour out of the rear main seal for a few miles till it leveled itself out. After doing that a couple of times, I decided to set it up for 5 quarts, and never had any more problems with the oil leaking, and always had plenty of oil in the pan when I changed it.
Having the oil level really high in the pan will put a lot of pressure on the seal. Just make a note of where the dipstick reading is when it leaks, and when it doesn't, and see if there is a correlation to the oil level and the leak. A non working PCV system will also put a strain on the seals and gaskets of the engine.
