Went out on Sunday to fire the truck up and got that awful metal to metal grinding sound from the starter. I quickly turned the key off, and tried again and it fired right up. I shut it down and started a few more times and couldn't get it to duplicate it...yet. My question is: Is this the beginning of the end for the starter? I have 103K on the clock, batteries and cables are clean and tight, and as far as I know, the original starter on the engine. Where's a good place for a replacement?
Thanks, I'll look at that tonight when I get home. After doing some reading, sounds like there are two different types of starters for PSD's. 2-bolt vs. 3 bolts???
Like Glenn said above......there was a post a few weeks ago where several guys were having problems with their starter bolts backing out on them. I changed mine out over 2 years ago with no problems, but I remember several guys saying they had tightened theirs a few times. Hopefully it's just loose bolts on yours. Avoid the Autozone lifetime warranty starters if you do end up replacing it. Napa has higher quality ones, or go with OEM.
Yeah, that would be nice that the bolts just worked themselves loose. Been snooping online and looks like $200 for a replacement. And I hear you about Autozone stuff, had many issues in the past over less than quality parts from them.
Sounds like loose bolts to me too, or either the gear on the flywheel or the one on the starter. Tapping it with any size hammer ain't gonna cure metal on metal grinding.

Thanks in Advance.
Chris kinda sounds like your starter may be starting to die, but go see if the bolts have backed out like the other guys said I hear that is pretty common.
For replacement you'll either have a nippindenso or mitsubishi I believe. My factory starter was the three-bolt mitsu and I actually ended up getting a Motorcraft certified rebuild. Some of the guys on here have gone with the high torque starters (they claim the 2 bolt high torque starters WILL fit).
If you need a local place to get a starter, go to H&B auto parts store in Englewood. Its a little hole in the wall place but Hank only sells quality product and won't give you a crap rebuild.
Well, bolts are nice and tight. A bit dirty underneath but that's it. Re-re-cleaned the battery posts again. Starts up fine. Man, I hate these kinds of things.
When mine went out, it had been slowly dying for about 6 months before it finally rolled over. The brushes inside the starter begin wearing out and eventually they won't catch anymore...that's the way the starter rebuild guys explained it to me.

Thanks for the heads up on H&B. Much rather give a guy like that my business vs. a chain store. BTW, It seems like mine is the 2 bolt style.
Now I'm leaning towards a broken tooth or two on the flex-plate or flywheel then. Cuz a dying starter will not make metal grinding noises. It may not happen again until you happen to shut the engine down in just the right (or wrong) spot.
