Exhaust ideas

I have a 2001 F250 with the 5.4 motor and I have to get a new muffler. My thoughts are of a cat back. I'd like to see what ones have the advantage of a lower sound, but not too loud. Any thoughts or reccommendations?

Well, if you have all the stock cats on, a 40 series shouldn't be too loud, depending on the tailpipe size and location. Or you could go for a Flowmaster 50 series, somewhat quieter but with the same deep tone. Our WickedFlow mufflers have a deep tone as well, though they may be too quiet for your liking.

I have the FM Force 2 cat-back with the FM70 muffler on my truck. (The $260 One) 2001 Ford F-250 Flowmaster Exhaust Systems, Force II Exhaust

The system is slightly louder than stock, but flows better. I modified my muffler to add a little more sound, but it is not annoying or very loud. Link to thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...-fm70-mod.html

Pretty much any cat-back exhaust on the market for the SD will not be loud, just a nice nice rumble.

OK. Still shopping. I still don't know if I want the dual rear exit or the stock exit. I like the look of the dual rears, but what are the drawbacks? More noise? As I said, I don't mind the low, quiet rumble at idle, but I don't want to go deaf or scare the neighborhood kids when I put the gas to it either.

Any thoughts?

Dave

Maybe a little more noise, but as DFK said, if you are running the stock cats, pretty much anything should be low and mellow.

This kinda what you are looking at, or do you want a kit?

Yep. I am planning on keeping the stock cats. Nothing wrong with them. Actually, it's just the muffler that's starting to buzz and puff.....so I figure on doing everything from there back.

Any other thoughts? Side? Rear? Twin rear?

I second that, dual exits behind the rear tires look good to me.

So, what are the sound or performance differences between 'dual out the rear', single stock out the side, or dual out both rears?

Also, with the dual out the back, what systems will work around the full size spare?

Thanks

Found this one:

Gibson 319652 - Gibson Swept Side Aluminized Cat-Back Exhaust Systems - JEGS

Thoughts?

I think the stock side exit would work well.

There are not going to be any performance differences that you'll ever notice between those systems. Sounds may vary slightly but not much because the systems all use a si/do muffler. Pretty much all catbacks on the market for your truck will fit around a stock size spare tire unless noted by the manufacturer. I would pick a system you like and contact the manufacturer just to make shure. I have a single 3" all mandrel bent system out the stock location on my 6.8l SD and it works very well.

The Gibson system you posted should work very well on your truck. It should give you more sound but not be annoying.

I would also recommend installing the Ebay Ypipe to help free up a bit of extra power. It welds in in place of the restrictive section of the stock y-pipe. For under $100 it is the best bang for the buck IMO. The y-pipe will also provide some more sound.

DFK, he has a 5.4L V8, not a V10. Your factory Y-pipe is ok. Not perfect, but replacing it would probably not yield anything noticeable.

Both the 5.4l and the 6.8l in the SD and Excursions use identical exhaust systems and that includes the y-pipe. The stock y-pipe is necked down on both. There are gains to be had with either engine by replacing the y-pipe section.
