1994 F150 5.0 4x4 rear ABS. The other night abs and ebrake light come on, lost the front steel line that runs from left to right caliper. I replaced the line, the calipers, pads, shoes, drums. System is obv full of air from installing the new line so I start bleeding from RR, LR, LF, RF with a vacuum pump. Tons of bubbles coming out. Cap off the receiver with a rag over the top. After going around a bunch of times, the pedal was still soft. So I did it manually and no air was coming out. I did not bleed the RABS because it is a giant ball of rust and do not have a replacement on hand. Do you think the vacuum pump is just sucking air in through the threads? Any other things to check that would cause pedal to be so soft? The truck is still on jackstands so I have not tested the brakes out. The shoes could probably be adjusted a little tighter if that would make a difference?
As you did not replace any of the hydraulic parts on the rear brakes then there should be no air in the RABS valve block. Crack open the pipe at the master cylinder going to the front brakes and bleed the master cylinder there. Then bleed RF,LF and it is possible to draw air past the bleed screw threads with a vacuum bleeder. I think you just have to keep bleeding at it.
So the ghetto MC bleeding worked pretty well. Opened up the line and a blast of air came out. Seems to be a lot better now. Thanks again. I know I should do it for real but it is working well now
I had to replace the master cylinder on my truck because of a spongy brake pedal. I realize this is years late, but I hope it helps others. the master cylinder replace helped improve the overall brake function of the truck 10 fold.
