no start

I have a 2002 f350 with 7.3 and 200,000 miles on it. if my truck sits more than a couple of hours it will not start unless you tow it off. I did have a turbo pedestal leak but I have fixed that. The truck will not start with starting fluid eithier. When I do tow it off the rpms will not get over 1500 and it has a bunch of white smoke. please offer any help

welcome to FTE....dont use starting fluid in your truck.if it needs help to fire..use WD-40....test the batteries and clean all the battery connections..your truck will turn over but not fire if there a little weak....

most likely a bad glow plug relay, but it could be anything in the glow plug circuit, including the glow plugs

i have put a new glow plug relay, glow plugs, and the dealership put a new cp in under recall and the batts are fully charged. this only happens if the truck sits for more than a couple hours it will not start. if i have recently started it then it will start right up. it still does not have any power after start. you canhold the pedal all the way down and only get 1500 rpm.

hey ron thank you for the wd 40 suggesstion. I normally use that but all i had the last time i tried this was starting fluid. I understand that to much starting fluid is bad for the pistons and valves.

I would take an oil sample and send it to blackstone to rule out injector O rings, if you have fuel contamination in the oil Blackstone labs will find it.

Check the oil level in your HPOP. Maybe it's draining down if it sits too long.

if you are sure the batteries are good..then do what like Chris said..check the oil level in the hpop after she sits for how ever long it takes for a no start...click the pic to see where to check oil level..

How old is your engine oil? The injectors fire off of engine oil which is why I was asking about the HPOP oil level.

Next time you have the no start condition try unplugging your ICP sensor (front inside of drivers head) to see if it will start. You shouldn't drive around like this, but it's good for diagnostic purposes.

Was their any oil in the plug from the ICP? With the sensor unplugged the PCM assumes default readings, so it that cures the start every time it's a bad sensor. Oil in the plug is another sign of the sensor going out.

However, this shouldn't cause the glow plug light to come back on and stay on. Why don't you check the main engine wiring harness. It's the big one that comes up and over the drivers side valve cover. You might need to take off the intake hose to get a good look at it, but check those wires below the little square box and see if they have been rubbing against the valve covers and chaffed the insulation off the wire. Follow the same wires up on top of the motor where they go around a metal bracket and check for the same thing. If one of those wires shorts against metal it will cause the glow plug light to stay on and will result in a no start, or stall.

thanks f350, this truck was a friend of my wife so i was trying to look at it to help him. I work fulltime for the tennessee national guard as a mechanic and I travel often with that job. So i had the truck for a week and fixed his brakes, park brake, serviced the rear wheel bearings, cleaned out his fuel filter housing and completley drained the oil and replaced it with new filter and i was in the process withyour alls help at identifing the no start issue. I guess he got tired of waiting on me so todya he took the truck to a local truck shop. the shop would not let me watch them or even tell them what all i had done. I did get a chance to uplug the icp and it did have oil in it but i did not have a chance to try and start it. When the shop gets done ill let you all know what the problem was. I was interested in one trying to help someone and two i have a 2002 x with the 7.3 so it will be helpful for me to find out the fix. I hate that i coul dnot help him but servingthe country and putting food on my table comes first. thanks to all of you for the suggestions.
