Question ???

with the radiator mounted in the bed

the upper & lower hoses are reversed

would that make it overheat in 15 minutes ????

Maybe you need a reverse rotation water pump to accomodate that change?

Don t really know why but yes it would, i had that problem and had the radiator exit tubes welded backwards, I think it has something to do with the dirction the waterpump sends the water preasure and the positions of the exits, I dont really know but my car did overheat due to that..

Im switching the pipes today

The more I think about it, the more I think thats the problem

Coolant enters the engine through the lower hose and exits the upper

there is no way air can get out of the system if its drawing coolant from the top of the radiator

Ill post later to let you know the outcome

Problem not solved --still overheats

no coolant comming out of thermostat housing when hot

im going to pull the heads this weekend and check the block passages and replace the head gaskets

what about the coolant plug on the mounting surface of the Aussie heads ?

does it need to be removed ?

You're joking right? You have got to kidding me. those two square holes on the head are where the coolant leave the head and go back into the block and then to the thermostate housing. At the back of the block plugs are fine but they MUST NOT be plugged in the front.
If the front has plugs then I think you have just found the problem.

Remember these are Aussie heads they were originally on Cleveland engines
with coolant flowing through the front of the intake
I cant remember if i popped the plugs out
But i know i blocked the front ports to the intake

Ill find out when I pull the heads this weekend

I didn't even know those heads were like that.
I thought only the boss 302 heads had the head to block surface pluged.
You learn something every day.

I was thinking about that too.............
today i removed the t stat housing and turned the water pump ---no coolant movement

so something is blocked, either the wrong head gaskets, or some blocked ports
Ill remove the heads and spin the water pump again to see if i have flow through the block.............

I did clean alot or radiator sealer out of the block, replaced all the freeze plugs too.
Maby i missed some ports (doubtful)

Were those heads used on a Clevor motor?
A Clevor feeds water from the heads through the intake manifold, not through the block as with a 335 series motor.

One thing to try could be to temporarily remove the radiator from the bed of the truck, build a stand for the radiator, place radiator on the stand, in front of, and with the radiator cap just higher than your highest point of coolant flow for the engine and run it.

What is your "routine" for adding coolant to the system?
