I just bought a 88 F150, 5.0/auto and was wondering how many gears the transmission has? 3+OD or 4+OD? Mine shifts 3 times and it feels like it's skipping third gear or maybe that's the way it's supposed to be?

Judging by the year, I believe you have the C-6 auto. This is a three speed with no OD. In my truck running empty, it shifts to second at about 25 and then into third at about 35-45 depending on how much I floor it. These tranys are pretty much bulletproof and will last almost forever with regular fluid changes. Congrats on your new-to-you rig.
So How do I deterine if the tranny is ok? It shifts fine from 1st to 2nd in a smoothe way like an automatic should, the next time it shifts the rpm dropps considerebly and the shift is quite firm, not like going from 1st to 2nd, and the last time it shifts, it feels/sounds like it's going into OD, no slipping. Any suggestions?
