I have V10 with 4.3 gears in rear. I drive on highway alot at 75 mph and my rpm is around 2500. My question is what affect on engine will be caused by my rpm range of 2500 to 2800? I don't want to shorten the life of my truck but also don't wont to travel under the speed limit. I tow a 7500Ib travel trailer 2 times a year for camping truck does good with tow. Should I keep gears or change to lower rpm?
Not an issue, truck is made to run. You are consuming more gas at that RPM than say 2000 but no one would say your motor would last longer with less gearing. If you want to lower your RPMs a little, replace your tires with 285/75 16...a little taller tire will reduce rpms and increase mpgs...of course a little wider tire will decrease mileage so the net with 285s is slight increase in mgs...change of about 5% in rpms
Look at the label on your door jamb for the two digit code. Post it here or compare it to the list in the Super Duty FAQ posted on top of the SD forum. You have about a 96% chance that you have 3.73s.
tape a string to the drive shaft. mark the tire move the truck 1 full tire revoluition mark to mark and count the # of times the string wrapped around the drive shaft. 3-3/4 times = 3.73 4-1/4 times = 4.30
