O.K Now that I have my power steering upgrade about complete, its about time to move on to the tranny(c-6/390) When I got the truck the owner said his buddy burned up the tranny towing???. When you first start it up it seems to be fine, although I havn't taken it out for a drive I have just backed up and drove forward in the driveway. until I get all steering bugs worked out. After it's been running about 5-10 minutes it doesn't want to go into gear and when it finaly does you give it gas about half throttle before it barley creeps along?? The tranny fluid doesn't look burned or smell bad????? any info would be greatly app
Sounds like it's time for a rebuild. Torque converter should also be changed out with a rebuilt one at the same time. Looking at probably about $260 for parts (master rebuild kit, one band, and a stock torque converter will run about that much) A shop can do the work for you, but their labor rate and parts cost will be considerable.
It is possible that the filter is clogged up and not allowing fluid through, I've seen this before but usually a trannie service will not last long if this is the case, so please don't get your hopes up.
The best thing to do is drop the pan and see what's in the bottom of it, lots of junk is bad news.
C-6's are not too bad to rebuild if you have the right tools or can make your own.
Many good mechanic's shy away from auto trannie's because they do not understand how they work and while I'm no expert I have rebuilt quite a few in my day. I took a class on rebuilding them years ago but had done so much on my own I spent more time helping others than I did anything else.
If your up to it get a good book on them and see what you can do with yours, I can always help you on here but if your in a hurry simply swap it out.
If nothing else find a junked one and tear it apart some time just so you can see what's in there.
