Hello every one.
I'm getting real bad bad chatter from my valve train I'm not sure if its the rockers or some thing worse but I don't know how to check to see whats making the noise, the rockers are none adjustable so i'm not sure how to check for lash
I checked too see if any thing was lose and nothing was I was able to turn one push rod by hand.
I know its next to impossible for you guys to know what it might be but any ideas or hint's would awesome.
How do you know it's valve clatter? When are you hearing it.. under what conditions?
When it warms up and is sitting at idle or driving from the right side of the engine I get this really nasty chat chat chat and fallows the rpm of the engine.
it sounds like pure metal on metal. I look at the rockers and springs and did not see any ware or shine..
But I get skips in timing or back fires and vacuum hangs around 15 at idle.
I'm thinking about taking some video of it and posting it as soon as I can find out how to do so
I'd say it's an exhaust leak.. probably a cracked manifold. You probably won't be able to see the cracks but the manifold will come off in pieces after you remove the bolts.

Sorry Doc But thats not it.
I fear its some thing internal. every one is going to think I'm crazy for doing this, I warmed the engine until the noise was really bad then popped off the valve cover and Ow did it get louder sounds like the engine is playing the spoons.
Oh I took off the manifold and checked every thing was fine.
The push rods are oiling great nothing seems lose all bolts are tight and torqued.
I would have been better off getting a junk yard engine then getting it from the place I got this paper weight.
Have you got a real oil pressure gauge to put on this thing? The dash gauge is just a switch and only indicates that you have 6psi oil pressure or more. A good motor will have about 15psi at idle and should build at least 10psi more per 1000rpm increase.
The usual way to set pre-load is to tighten the lock nut until you start to feel resistance when turning the pushrod, then tighten another 1/2-3/4 turn.
When you say skips in timing, what does that mean? Like it's missing? Or the timing is jumping around?
Backfires (through the carb) and low vacuum are symptoms of retarded timing. Try advancing it a couple of degrees at a time until you get it above 20".
As far as the noise, if the rockers are already super tight it might be your rocker tips are worn or the valve tips were ground. The engine is a recent rebuild, right?
Many years ago we had rebuilt a 302 and got the same clatter. It turned out to be three bent push rods.
As stated by others make sure oil system and timing are good.
good luck

No I would say the timing is fine. O
ther then my truck all ways being a little low on the vac side of things.
It sits around 14/15 area.
Before I installed this HEI I could not advance the timing over 9 or I started getting pings, and also had very low vac around 9, and this was after the said rebuild of the engine. But since I installed this HEI I have been able to advance the time lot to get more vac at the carb.
