Wal-Mart Roll on bed

When I first started this it was in the Winter time and I had read the instructions and thought I was doing it the rightway but it was my fualt that it turned out bad. I was with in the outside temperature limits when I rolled it all on but the day after I did it it was below freezing and the roll on did not have time to reset. I wrote an email to the company and they were the perfect comapny that sent me another gallon to redo it when the weather was warmer, which I did last week.

The project would not have been near as hard if I had not had to get the old stuff off.

This is a picture of the bad stuff I had to clean off

Another before picture

Here are the tools I used

Here is a picture of what the bed looked like before applying the roll-on

I don't have an after picture yet but I am going to go home and take one and post it. I have to say I definatly think it is good, I saw someone say that it is just like black paint but I think it is much better because of the rubberized feel to it. It seems to me that it will be pretty durable and for under $50.00 it turned out very well I think.

Keep us posted on how durable it is. I'm thinking of doing my bed and inside of the cab but have too many other projects in the way.

If it's anything like the Herculiner it will start peeling off in places if you use your bed to carry things around. I used the herculiner roll on bed liner 2 years ago. About 95% is still on, but the other 5% is scrapes and gouges.

With the Hurculiner did you Electric-drill-wire-brush the whole bed? Because they only called for scratch guard scuffing the bed in the instructions. I think the power wire brushing will give the rollon material enough to hang on better than just scuffing.

I'am also curious about the quality of this product as I would like to use it in various places in and under the truck. We had some of our dumptrucks undercoated by the professional app and it held up very well. Keep us posted.

No, but I did scratch the bed up enough without the drill, plus the truck already had 150,000 miles of use on it so it was nowhere near new condition.

I deal with some coatings at work so it wasn't a lack of surface prep that is the problem. The main difference is a single component urethane does not adhere as well as a plural component polyurea (spray in). The chemical reaction of the plural component product creates a stronger liner with better adhesion.

I had Line X spray my tailgate when the truck was new and there's no comparison between these products. The line x wins hands down.

With that said, I have managed to put a couple of gouges in the line x tailgate as well. And as I mentioned earlier, 95% of the roll on liner is still in place. I don't consider the roll on a waste of money. Just be advised if you use the bed of your truck to haul a bunch of stuff around be prepared for some damage to the liner.

Some damage to the liner is a lot better than alot of damage to the truck. Ive been hauling scrap metal in my truck since I got it and im tearing the crap out of it. When i got it it had like 2 scratches on the paint in the bed. Ive got bare matal showing everywhere in the bed now.A guy i worked with said 300 bucks to paint the bedliner in my truck. So is the 80 dollar Wally World kit worth that? Im not loooking for show quality, just enough to protect my truck, and look decent doing it.

If you don't mind some damage to the bedliner, then it's worth every penny. Just don't skimp on the prep work.

I just did my whole bed with the Plasti-Kote liner and I think it looks great.
My whole bed was starting to get rusty even had one pinhole rusted through that I had to repair.
It took me 8 hours with a pressurized sand blaster to prep it.
I don't haul much with it but even if it does come off the instructions said that all you need to do is use the spray on to touch it up.
The 45 bucks I spent at walmart was much cheaper than the cost of getting one sprayed in.I wish I had a picture to show you but I think it looks as good as any spray in liner job I have seen, and I am picky when it comes to what my truck looks like.

I did some good prep work and installed a herculiner kit. Turned out great.
Just take your time preping. Then lay down a good (thin) evenly coated 1st coat. Then go back and lay a thick coat down.

I've thought about putting the roll-on or spray-on stuff in my bed, and have wondered if it would work for an under-coat too. I've heard you can have problems with it though--like when it starts to chip or flake off water can get trapped under the liner and promote rust. I'm still not sure if that's a valid concern or not (?)

For right now I've been using an old peice of rubber roofing (I got it for free). I cut it to fit my bed, cut around the wheel wells and made a decent home-made bed mat. It offers the bed protection, and it's light weight so it's not problem taking it out when i'm not hauling. I don't leave it in the bed all the time--again, because I don't want water laying under it.

Yes that's a valid concern, as trapped moisture will promote rust. However, from what I've seen, I don't think the cohesive properties of this coating are strong enough for this to be a concern from normal wear and tear, rock chips etc. Scratches and gouges in my liner have not affected adhesion of the adjacent coating.

If you don't get the underside spotless and prepped correctly, then I can see this being a problem.

I've seen people use it as a undercoating with no trouble. I wouldn't want to put it every where, but that's me.

I put some on the wheel wells of my 79 close two 2 years ago, and it is still holding up fine. No chipping, pealing, or anything, and I go down a lot of gravel roads with it, so my mud tires are constantly throwing up gravel.

Dang sorry guys I forgot to take a finished picture before the long weekend. Hopefully I will get a chance to do it tonight before my son's ball game. I have to take the bed off to replace the filler hose that goes to the gas tank. At that time I am planning to also undercoat the truck. I am not going to use the Wal-Mart rollon stuff though, I am planning to use the rubberized driveway stuff instead. It is only like $11.00 a 5 gallon bucket so I am very willing to experiment with it. I have been told on other forums that it works very well used in this way.
