P0741 code

had scan done for codes at local shop P0741 was the trouble code that came up. did all diagnostic test for this code all was fine voltage, ohms, computer commands, soleniod test passed...............was told a bore in the valve body worn out..not holding correct pressure which triggers code so now the valve body needs to be removed bore reamed out and an oversized valve put in to fix this problem.........what do you think.................600.00 as long as there is nothing in the pan ie clutch material......doesnt think there will be due to the low milage 2003 mercury mountaineer awd 4.0 68,000 miles .. sound right to anyone anyone else experience this problem.

That happens from time to time. I say go for it, even if it wasn't already broken, I would do it. Makes the shifts firmer, and makes the trans last longer.

You can do this yourself in your driveway for about $300, with a complete new valve body. Only special tool needed is an inch pound tq wrench. My research has found that solenoids can bleed pressure even if they are showing correct resistance and actuating when power is put to them. The valves can get "stuff" in them (dirt, hair, gasket) and cause the same kind of failure. I replaced my whole valve body with a rebuilt unit (bores all honed/checked, new solenoids, redesigned flow patterns that are better than the ford tsb, etc). Central Valve Bodies in OK is where it came from, you can do a web search and find their web site to check if local distribution is available in your area or contact them direct if not.

Need some advice

I went to AAMCO shop and they did a multi-point inspection which revealed that my fluid level is OK but my problem is that the transmission is shifting harsh from 2nd to 3rd, shifting late throughout all the gears, and a computer scan revealed the following code: P0741 TCC system performance3 torque converterslip is greater than expected.

As he was walking me through this, he told me that my entire transmission would have to be rebuilt. Which would cost me $2000+. I don't know much about cars so I took it to an actual Ford dealer. He told me that my Solenoid Shift shaft would need to be replaced costing me $1000+. I don't know who to believe or what to believe... can anyone help me with this?

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

What year is your Explorer, and which engine does it have?

I'm not sure where you're located, but last year I had the valve body replaced and a couple of bores drilled and sleeved in my 2004 Aviator (5-speed automatic) for less than $700 by a respected local independent transmission shop. If all it needed was the valve body that would have run $465. Seems like you might want to shop around for an independent transmission shop, not a dealership or a chain.
