I have a 351-m in my '78 F-250. Its been bored .030 over, has a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb and Edelbrock intake, and headman headers. Other then that the engine is stock. Could someone suggest a good cam to put in it to gain some h.p. and pulling power. It doesn't pull hills worth a damn if you got a load in the back. Also, is it a good idea when getting a cam to get the lifters and springs to go with it? or will the stock ones work. Thanks
I have a Crane .524 lift and 272 duration cam in my 79 F250 with a 400 (same motor just different crank and rods) and I would have gone a little smaller previous owner installed it, mabey not on the lift but on the duration, doesn't start making power until about 2K rpms. The truck runs good but I know I wouldn't want any thing bigger for sure if I was pulling trailers on a regular basis I really need my granny gear to get things rolling up hill when loaded. Do you have an after market timing chain set? The original replacement sets have the cam timing retarded for emissions reasons so you want to be sure to replace that with a double roller set when you change the cam.

The crane 523901 cam or 523902 can and lifter kit is a good choice for a engine like that. It is the H-260-2 grind (260/272 duration .493/.502 lift 112Lobe) seperation. It will have a smooth type idle and start making better torque than sthe stock cam starting at 1500 rpm. I have this same profile in my 80 bronc's
300 six. It is a very good profile, not too big at all.
hmmm na if its a stock engine your static compression is to low for the hmv 272 crane cam, go with the comp cam extreme energy xe256 but if you ever upgrade to a 400 you will need to change the cam, so maybe to foresee this i would choose the xe262h, this guesstimates help alot in cam choices and the are really not so farr away from real results why an engine on the "fly" :
i have a 351M built to a 400 with a 400 crank turned 10 and block bored 30 over with edelbrock intake and edelbrock 4bbl carb, what cam would be the best for mine?
Most of all of the cams mententioned on this thread can use a drop-in (stock size) high performance srping.
While the stock springs might work for under 4000rpm , Its cheap insurance to go with the better springs anyway. I wouldn't trust a 25 year old spring.
Sping and retainer kits can be found for around $85 on fleabay.
Stock springs will bind if you use them with a cam with over 0.500 lift. I recommend replacing the springs on a cam change unless you are sure that they will not bind with the new cam.
