hi all,
problems again. ok.. the basics 1993 f150 4.9 5 speed manual trans. the truck chugs and bucks like an engine miss when i let off the throttle. it does it the worst if i have the throttle cracked open just a little bit. like trying to maintain a slower downtown speeds. if i'm going down the highway it doesnt chug however i can feel the engine holding back like its not getting enough gas. i have replaced a multitude of parts on this truck. cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter etc. could this be an injector problem or fuel pressure regulator problem? i'm lost on this one.. is there a way to check for faulty injectors? i know i can have the pressure at the rail checked. any suggestions? thanks again.
I'd Definately get the fuel pressure checked. Also your chugging problem seems pretty common with the EFI 300s. I think its related to the EGR valve. Try running a search in this forum. I know its been discussed before.
On the EGR note, that's possible. The valve is only supposed to operate at cruise, under light load. Upon deceleration, the valve should close. If it's hanging-up, and not quite closing fast enough, it will cause rough idle concerns and possibly the bucking and trailer-hitching that you've been feeling. This would be more pronounced in the driveline on a manual trans, as the engine doesn't have the "cushion" that the torque converter would provide an A/T model.
thanks for the info guys.. i pulled that egr off once to check it and it seems to be ok but maybe i better check it again. getting sick of wrenching on this truck but not gonna drive it like this.. another note.. seems to mostly buck when i'm in a lower gear. when i have the least load possible on the engine. except at idle - nothing.. maybe it is opening up way too soon. i'll check and get back to you all..
well, i blocked off the egr and no more stuttering and bucking. funny.. spent a few hundred bucks at the repair shop and they couldnt figure it out. guess i'll go here first from now on! thanx again guys
Ya, i have that problem and with a manual tranny it can get really bad. it would be the whole truck bucking really bad under slow speed acceleration. I finally gave up on fixing it and changed my driving habits so it doesn't happen near as much.
update.. went on a little road trip this memorial weekend.. before i was getting around 10mpg but after the egr fix i got 14.5. what a difference! way less of a dent in the pocketbook.
just had a new cat put on .. probably time for o2 sensor. transmission fluid last month with new clutch. differential - dont know last time it was changed.. not really high on my list compared to the rest of it.
