Loaded and headed out in the morning. I drove the truck with a 32foot gooseneck and a Jeep on it. It threw a code P0299 Turbo underboosting. I need this truck to go about 400 miles tomorrow. It only has 40,000 miles on it and has already had 2 EGR coolers, 2 head gaskets, 4 bent rods. I am about to drive it off a cliff.
Should I just drive it tomorrow. It is underwarranty. Any advice would be helpful.
After all that and you still have problems. When you say 2 head gaskets you mean they replaced both of them once I hope. If it was me I would drive it in the ground. Do you have extended warranty? I had my share of problems with my 04 and got rid of it and now love my 07. I think its probably the best vehicle I have ever owned. I hope every thing works out and good luck on your trip.
No they replaced the passenger side twice. After that I made about 400 miles of towing and about 250 miles of daily driving. I do not drive it much and baby it. I just bought an excursion with a 7.3 as a back up to my pretty much new 6.0. Sad.
I am loaded and going to head out in the morning. if the Turbo goes on me I will deal with it then. If anyone has connections at a Ford Dealer between Beaumont, Tx, and San Antonio....let me know. If I could get it looked at quick I would be in huge debt to you.
I would think that if they had to replace the head gasket on one side twice that they would do some major checking. Did they offer to put in the ARP studs? Did they put a new head on the second time? I learned the hard way. I babied my 04 and it was nothing but a headache. My 07 is another story, I drive it like I stole it and haven't had any problems with it at all. Like the guy said earlier, you have to drive them hard to keep things loose and clean. I wish I could help you with a dealer but dont know any in TX. Good luck on the trip, hope all goes well.
If you got a PO299 turbo underboosting than I would not drive it harder. Usually when you get that code it can also cause an overboost when driving it hard. I had the same thing happen and drove my truck about 2,000 miles but I kept a close eye on the boost and caught it overboosting twice while pulling up a hill. The first time it hit 40 psi and the second time it hit 36 psi. I have a aftermarket gauge along with the one on the dash so I caught it right away before causing any damange. That kind of overboosting can lift heads blow off hoses and crack intercoolers so be careful. I believe it is because the turbo is sticking. I never got a code for the overboost just the underboost. When I got back from my trip I took it to the dealer and they replaced the turbo under warranty.
Yeah I really watch the boost on it and try to never go over 20. They would do change the heads studs to any aftermarket. They said they would have to flag the vehicle and it would void the warranty. We are going to go but I already told my relief driver, the wife, not to let it go over 20 on the turbo. Drive it on RMP and Turbo and MPH. We will see. If I can get there I will be happy. This is only Vacation we take till Xmas and it screwed this past Xmas up. If it screws this up the plasma comes out

If you never boost over 20psi the vanes never open all the way. They need to move through their full range now and then or they will tend to get stuck. I learned the hard way by babying my truck. I now boost it up to max boost at least once per week, and no problems since in the last 20,000 miles.

I totally agree. I did the same thing by not exercising my turbo. Believe me, this one gets exercised. The truck is rated for 26 to 29+ psi. You will not hurt it if you run it up to that point. Anything over, well thats another story. Just watch your gage and you should be fine. At least I hope so.
The bad thing about the egr cooler and headgaskets is that no matter how many times they are replaced, the same thing is put back in so you run just as much risk of the same problems over and over.
The turbo might be starting to stick because the bad egr coolers that were replaced sent coolant through the turbo, This is what happened to mine.
Adding ARP headstuds and blocking off the egr will make your truck much more reliable. Check around at different dealers because some of them will put in studs without voiding your warranty.
With that code, you're definitely going to be getting a new turbo. My friend had that code in his 04 X and he continued to pull his toyhauler through the Southern Utah mountains for another week without any problems. Do you have a tuner in the truck? My friend's X would only throw that code when he was running his Superchips tuner. 3 weeks later he received a new turbo. I think if you watch the gauges, you'll be good for a while.
Well I made it there and back. Ran into a Powerstroke mechanic at the event. He told me that it sounded like the Turbo was about to go. Also said the sound it is making sounds like it is shearing metal off and when it does it seems to dump it on the number 6. gave me a list of things for them to check. And yes, he siad they almost always replace the turbo with that code. I ran the **** out of it on the way the way back
