Today with gas over 3.75 a gallon, and hearing on the news that oil is a $132 a barrel, I have decided to buy a small gas miser car. I hate these cars. They are small, smelly, cumbersome, and in my opinion down right un-safe. But at 4 bucks a gallon, and by mid August, 5 bucks a gallon I have no choice. The F-150 will soon become a driveway king.
I am going to buy a Toyota Prius. At 50 miles per gallon, I have no choise.
My F150 gets 12 mpg around town. The Prius gets 31 MPG around town, and 50 on the highway.
I hate these little cars with a passion. But, if I am to drive, I have to do it in a way that won't put my family in the poor house.
How long will it take you driving the Prius to justify the $20G's or more it costs to buy it? Buy a second hand beater and it'll pay for itself in months instead of years.
I bought an 81 Courier and get high 20s in mixed driving. By contrast, my old car got almost 25 highway, but about 8 in town, and in the same routes would use twice the gas of the Courier.
At current prices, I'm saving $40 a week on gas, which when compared to the $400 purchase price of the Courier, gives you a total of ten weeks to pay itself off.
I'd also recommend getting a used "beater". It doesn't really have to be a beater though. A diesel Jetta will get 50 mpg no problem. Doesn't even have to be a new one, a 92 is still a good looking car.
I think I'm going to buy a gas guzzler or two, so I can use up all of the oil in the Middle East.
Then we can start drilling our own oil and become the oil mecca of the world.
im already looking and calculating numbers for september for the trade in. i can only have 1 vehicle, dont have cash laying around for a beater, and i have a loan on the ranger, but i need to do something, it doesnt matter cautious i drive, 15mpg highway, and 12-14 city stop and go traffic and ac on, it aint working for me.
plus i have a boat, and towing mpg is a joke, i havent even made my annual run to the ten thousand islands for a weekend fishing trip, because of ******* gas
im over that ******* 3 letter word
im waiting for my only in florida part 4 thread, where i can imagine a guy going postal on a gas station, barreling his rig through the pumps..........hope it aint me,my tremor is sweet looking
I sure am Glad I traded in my Cab and chassy last year for a regular half ton Truck! the old rig got 8-9 mpg, Now I get around 16-18 even pulling a small trailer, Not to mention the Insurance is almost 100 bucks a month cheaper!
93 Escort 251,000 miles and still counting...30mpg plus around town, 40 plus on the highway...and you can buy these cars for 1000-1500.
You get 40+ on the highway? How?? My 94 gets close to 40 when I drive ultra conservative to and from work. I paid $500 for it 3 years ago, and have spent a few bucks on it- new head, radiator, hoses, water pump, oil sensor, windshield (x2), two door windows (vandals)- but it has more than paid for itself. If and when it dies, I'll probably get another one.
